jab lag dunee-aa rahee-ai naanak kichh sunee-ai kichh kahee-ai.
As long as we are in this world, O Nanak, we should listen, and speak of the Lord.

Bwil rhy hm rhxu n pwieAw jIviqAw mir rhIAY ]5]2] (661-1)
bhaal rahay ham rahan na paa-i-aa jeevti-aa mar rahee-ai. ||5||2||
I have searched, but I have found no way to remain here; so, remain dead while yet alive. ||5||2||

ki-o simree sivri-aa nahee jaa-ay.
How can I remember the Lord in meditation? I cannot meditate on Him in remembrance.

qpY ihAwau jIAVw ibllwie ] (661-4)
tapai hi-aa-o jee-arhaa billaa-ay.
My heart is burning, and my soul is crying out in pain.

isrij svwry swcw soie ] (661-4)
siraj savaaray saachaa so-ay.
The True Lord creates and adorns.

iqsu ivsirAY cMgw ikau hoie ]1] (661-5)
tis visri-ai changa ki-o ho-ay. ||1||
Forgetting Him, how can one be good? ||1||

ihkmiq hukim n pwieAw jwie ] (661-5)
hikmat hukam na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
By clever tricks and commands, He cannot be found.

ikau kir swic imlau myrI mwie ]1] rhwau ] (661-5)
ki-o kar saach mila-o mayree maa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
How am I to meet my True Lord, O my mother? ||1||Pause||

vKru nwmu dyKx koeI jwie ] (661-6)
vakhar naam daykhan ko-ee jaa-ay.
How rare is the one who goes out, and searches for the merchandise of the Naam.

nw ko cwKY nw ko Kwie ] (661-6)
naa ko chaakhai naa ko khaa-ay.
No one tastes it, and no one eats it.

loik pqIxY nw piq hoie ] (661-6)
lok pateenai naa pat ho-ay.
Honor is not obtained by trying to please other people.

qw piq rhY rwKY jw soie ]2] (661-7)
taa pat rahai raakhai jaa so-ay. ||2||
One's honor is preserved, only if the Lord preserves it. ||2||

jh dyKw qh rihAw smwie ] (661-7)
jah daykhaa tah rahi-aa samaa-ay.
Wherever I look, there I see Him, pervading and permeating.

quDu ibnu dUjI nwhI jwie ] (661-7)
tuDh bin doojee naahee jaa-ay.
Without You, I have no other place of rest.

jy ko kry kIqY ikAw hoie ] (661-8)
jay ko karay keetai ki-aa ho-ay.
He may try, but what can anyone do by his own doing?

ijs no bKsy swcw soie ]3] (661-8)
jis no bakhsay saachaa so-ay. ||3||
He alone is blessed, whom the True Lord forgives. ||3||

huix auiT clxw muhiq ik qwil ] (661-8)
hun uth chalnaa muhat ke taal.
Now, I shall have to get up and depart, in an instant, in the clapping of hands.

ikAw muhu dysw gux nhI nwil ] (661-9)
ki-aa muhu daysaa gun nahee naal.
What face will I show the Lord? I have no virtue at all.

jYsI ndir kry qYsw hoie ] (661-9)
jaisee nadar karay taisaa ho-ay.
As is the Lord's Glance of Grace, so it is.

ivxu ndrI nwnk nhI koie ]4]1]3] (661-9)
vin nadree naanak nahee ko-ay. ||4||1||3||
Without His Glance of Grace, O Nanak, no one is blessed. ||4||1||3||

ndir kry qw ismirAw jwie ] (661-10)
nadar karay taa simri-aa jaa-ay.
If the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then one remembers Him in meditation.

Awqmw dRvY rhY ilv lwie ] (661-10)
aatmaa darvai rahai liv laa-ay.
The soul is softened, and he remains absorbed in the Lord's Love.

Awqmw prwqmw eyko krY ] (661-11)
aatmaa paraatamaa ayko karai.
His soul and the Supreme Soul become one.

AMqr kI duibDw AMqir mrY ]1] (661-11)
antar kee dubiDhaa antar marai. ||1||
The duality of the inner mind is overcome. ||1||

gur prswdI pwieAw jwie ] (661-11)
gur parsaadee paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
By Guru's Grace, God is found.

hir isau icqu lwgY iPir kwlu n Kwie ]1] rhwau ] (661-11)
har si-o chit laagai fir kaal na khaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One's consciousness is attached to the Lord, and so Death does not devour him. ||1||Pause||

sic ismirAY hovY prgwsu ] (661-12)
sach simri-ai hovai pargaas.
Remembering the True Lord in meditation, one is enlightened.

qw qy ibiKAw mih rhY audwsu ] (661-12)
taa tay bikhi-aa meh rahai udaas.
Then, in the midst of Maya, he remains detached.

siqgur kI AYsI vifAweI ] (661-13)
satgur kee aisee vadi-aa-ee.
Such is the Glory of the True Guru;

puqR klqR ivcy giq pweI ]2] (661-13)
putar kaltar vichay gat paa-ee. ||2||
in the midst of children and spouses, they attain emancipation. ||2||

AYsI syvku syvw krY ] (661-13)
aisee sayvak sayvaa karai.
Such is the service which the Lord's servant performs,

ijs kw jIau iqsu AwgY DrY ] (661-14)
jis kaa jee-o tis aagai Dharai.
that he dedicates his soul to the Lord, to whom it belongs.

swihb BwvY so prvwxu ] (661-14)
saahib bhaavai so parvaan.
One who is pleasing to the Lord and Master is acceptable.

so syvku drgh pwvY mwxu ]3] (661-14)
so sayvak dargeh paavai maan. ||3||
Such a servant obtains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||3||

siqgur kI mUriq ihrdY vswey ] (661-14)
satgur kee moorat hirdai vasaa-ay.
He enshrines the image of the True Guru in his heart.

jo ieCY soeI Plu pwey ] (661-15)
jo ichhai so-ee fal paa-ay.
He obtains the rewards which he desires.

swcw swihbu ikrpw krY ] (661-15)
saachaa saahib kirpaa karai.
The True Lord and Master grants His Grace;

so syvku jm qy kYsw frY ]4] (661-15)
so sayvak jam tay kaisaa darai. ||4||
how can such a servant be afraid of death? ||4||

Bniq nwnku kry vIcwru ] (661-16)
bhanat naanak karay veechaar.
Prays Nanak, practice contemplation,

swcI bwxI isau Dry ipAwru ] (661-16)
saachee banee si-o Dharay pi-aar.
and enshrine love for the True Word of His Bani.

qw ko pwvY moK duAwru ] (661-16)
taa ko paavai mokh du-aar.
Then, you shall find the Gate of Salvation.

jpu qpu sBu iehu sbdu hY swru ]5]2]4] (661-16)
jap tap sabh ih sabad hai saar. ||5||2||4||
This Shabad is the most excellent of all chanting and austere meditations. ||5||2||4||

jIau qpqu hY bwro bwr ] (661-17)
jee-o tapat hai baaro baar.
My soul burns, over and over again.

qip qip KpY bhuqu bykwr ] (661-17)
tap tap khapai bahut baykaar.
Burning and burning, it is ruined, and it falls into evil.

jY qin bwxI ivsir jwie ] (661-18)
jai tan banee visar jaa-ay.
That body, which forgets the Word of the Guru's Bani,

ijau pkw rogI ivllwie ]1] (661-18)
ji-o pakaa rogee villaa-ay. ||1||
cries out in pain, like a chronic patient. ||1||

bhuqw bolxu JKxu hoie ] (661-18)
bahutaa bolan jhakhan ho-ay.
To speak too much and babble is useless.

ivxu boly jwxY sBu soie ]1] rhwau ] (661-19)
vin bolay jaanai sabh so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even without our speaking, He knows everything. ||1||Pause||

ijin kn kIqy AKI nwku ] (661-19)
jin kan keetay akhee naak.
He created our ears, eyes and nose.

ijin ijhvw idqI boly qwqu ] (661-19)
jin jihvaa ditee bolay taat.
He gave us our tongue to speak so fluently.
