ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

Sachæ sabaḋ neesaaṇ tʰaak na paa▫ee▫æ.

No one blocks the way of those who are blessed with the Banner of the True Word of the Shabad.

ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥੧੮॥

Sach suṇ bujʰ vakʰaaṇ mahal bulaa▫ee▫æ. ||18||

Hearing, understanding and speaking Truth, one is called to the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. ||18||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok mėhlaa 1.

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਪਹਿਰਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

Pahiraa agan hivæ gʰar baaḋʰaa bʰojan saar karaa▫ee.

If I dressed myself in fire, and built my house of snow, and made iron my food;

ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

Saglé ḋookʰ paaṇee kar peevaa ḋʰarṫee haak chalaa▫ee.

and if I were to drink all pain like water, and drive the entire earth before me;

ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਅੰਬਰੁ ਤੋਲੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਟੰਕੁ ਚੜਾਈ ॥

Ḋʰar ṫaaraajee ambar ṫolee pichʰæ tank chaṛaa▫ee.

and if I were to place the earth upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin;

ਏਵਡੁ ਵਧਾ ਮਾਵਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਸੈ ਨਥਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

Évad vaḋʰaa maavaa naahee sabʰsæ naṫʰ chalaa▫ee.

and if I were to become so great that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all;

ਏਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

Éṫaa ṫaaṇ hovæ man anḋar karee bʰė aakʰ karaa▫ee.

and if I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do my bidding-so what?

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਤੇਵਡ ਦਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

Jévad saahib ṫévad ḋaaṫee ḋé ḋé karé rajaa▫ee.

As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts. He bestows them according to His Will.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥

Naanak naḋar karé jis upar sach naam vadi▫aa▫ee. ||1||

O Nanak! Those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1||

ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Mėhlaa 2.

Second Mehl:

ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਰਜਿਆ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਨ ਰਜੇ ਕੰਨ ॥

Aakʰaṇ aakʰ na raji▫aa sunaṇ na rajé kann.

The mouth is not satisfied by speaking, and the ears are not satisfied by hearing.

ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਰਜੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕ ਇਕ ਵੰਨ ॥

Akʰee ḋékʰ na rajee▫aa guṇ gaahak ik vann.

The eyes are not satisfied by seeing-each organ seeks out one sensory quality.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਲੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

Bʰukʰi▫aa bʰukʰ na uṫræ galee bʰukʰ na jaa▫é.

The hunger of the hungry is not appeased; by mere words, hunger is not relieved.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

Naanak bʰukʰaa ṫaa rajæ jaa guṇ kahi guṇee samaa▫é. ||2||

O Nanak! Hunger is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Praiseworthy Lord. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

viṇ saché sabʰ kooṛ kooṛ kamaa▫ee▫æ.

Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਬੰਨਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥

viṇ saché kooṛi▫aar bann chalaa▫ee▫æ.

Without the True One, the false ones are bound and gagged and driven off.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਰਲਾਈਐ ॥

viṇ saché ṫan chʰaar chʰaar ralaa▫ee▫æ.

Without the True One, the body is just ashes, and it mingles again with ashes.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਜਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥

viṇ saché sabʰ bʰukʰ jė pæjʰæ kʰaa▫ee▫æ.

Without the True One, all food and clothes are unsatisfying.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

viṇ saché ḋarbaar kooṛ na paa▫ee▫æ.

Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord’s Court.

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥

Kooṛæ laalach lag mahal kʰu▫aa▫ee▫æ.

Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence is lost.

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਓ ਠਗਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

Sabʰ jag tʰagi▫o tʰag aa▫ee▫æ jaa▫ee▫æ.

The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation.

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੧੯॥

Ṫan mėh ṫarisnaa ag sabaḋ bujʰaa▫ee▫æ. ||19||

Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਰੁਖੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

Naanak gur sanṫokʰ rukʰ ḋʰaram ful fal gi▫aan.

O Nanak! The Guru is the tree of contentment, with flowers of faith, and fruits of spiritual wisdom.

ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਪਕੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥

Ras rasi▫aa hari▫aa saḋaa pakæ karam ḋʰi▫aan.

Watered with the Lord’s Love, it remains forever green; through the karma of good deeds and meditation, it ripens.

ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਖਾਦਾ ਲਹੈ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

Paṫ ké saaḋ kʰaaḋaa lahæ ḋaanaa kæ sir ḋaan. ||1||

Honor is obtained by eating this tasty dish; of all gifts, this is the greatest gift. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਪਤ ਪਰਵਾਲਾ ਫੁਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ॥

Su▫iné kaa birakʰ paṫ parvaalaa ful javéhar laal.

The Guru is the tree of gold, with leaves of coral, and blossoms of jewels and rubies.

ਤਿਤੁ ਫਲ ਰਤਨ ਲਗਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਖਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥

Ṫiṫ fal raṫan lagėh mukʰ bʰaakʰiṫ hirḋæ riḋæ nihaal.

The Words from His Mouth are fruits of jewels. Within His Heart, He beholds the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ॥

Naanak karam hovæ mukʰ masṫak likʰi▫aa hovæ lékʰ.

O Nanak! He is obtained by those, upon whose faces and foreheads such pre-recorded destiny is written.

ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥

Atʰisatʰ ṫiraṫʰ gur kee charṇee poojæ saḋaa visékʰ.

The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are contained in the constant worship of the feet of the Exalted Guru.

ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਕੋਪੁ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਦੀਆ ਅਗਿ ॥

Hans héṫ lobʰ kop chaaré naḋee▫aa ag.

Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire.

ਪਵਹਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਲਗਿ ॥੨॥

Pavėh ḋajʰėh naankaa ṫaree▫æ karmee lag. ||2||

Falling into them, one is burned, O Nanak! One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ ॥

Jeevḋi▫aa mar maar na pachʰoṫaa▫ee▫æ.

While you are alive, conquer death, and you shall have no regrets in the end.

ਝੂਠਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥

Jʰootʰaa ih sansaar kin samjaa▫ee▫æ.

This world is false, but only a few understand this.

ਸਚਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਈਐ ॥

Sach na ḋʰaré pi▫aar ḋʰanḋʰæ ḋʰaa▫ee▫æ.

People do not enshrine love for the Truth; they chase after worldly affairs instead.

ਕਾਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਖੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆਈਐ ॥

Kaal buraa kʰæ kaal sir ḋunee▫aa▫ee▫æ.

The terrible time of death and annihilation hovers over the heads of the world.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥

Hukmee sir janḋaar maaré ḋaa▫ee▫æ.

By the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥

Aapé ḋé▫é pi▫aar man vasaa▫ee▫æ.

The Lord Himself gives His Love, and enshrines it within their minds.

ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਚਸਾ ਵਿਲੰਮੁ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

Muhaṫ na chasaa vilamm bʰaree▫æ paa▫ee▫æ.

Not a moment or an instant’s delay is permitted, when one’s measure of life is full.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੦॥

Gur parsaadee bujʰ sach samaa▫ee▫æ. ||20||

By Guru’s Grace, one comes to know the True One, and is absorbed into Him. ||20||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਤੁਮੀ ਤੁਮਾ ਵਿਸੁ ਅਕੁ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਨਿਮੁ ਫਲੁ ॥

Ṫumee ṫumaa vis ak ḋʰaṫooraa nim fal.

Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and nim fruit -

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥

Man mukʰ vasėh ṫis jis ṫooⁿ chiṫ na aavhee.

these bitter poisons lodge in the minds and mouths of those who do not remember You.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੰਢਨਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ॥੧॥

Naanak kahee▫æ kis handʰan karmaa baahré. ||1||

O Nanak! How shall I tell them this? Without the karma of good deeds, they are only destroying themselves. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਮਤਿ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਕਬ ਉਤਮ ਕਬ ਨੀਚ ॥

Maṫ pankʰéroo kiraṫ saaṫʰ kab uṫam kab neech.

The intellect is a bird; on account of its actions, it is sometimes high, and sometimes low.
