ਹਰਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰਾ ॥
हरि पड़ीऐ हरि बुझीऐ गुरमती नामि उधारा ॥
Har paṛee▫æ har bujʰee▫æ gurmaṫee naam uḋʰaaraa.
Study the Lord’s Name, and understand the Lord’s Name; follow the Guru’s Teachings, and through the Naam, you shall be saved.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
गुरि पूरै पूरी मति है पूरै सबदि बीचारा ॥
Gur pooræ pooree maṫ hæ pooræ sabaḋ beechaaraa.
Perfect are the Teachings of the Perfect Guru; contemplate the Perfect Word of the Shabad.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
अठसठि तीरथ हरि नामु है किलविख काटणहारा ॥२॥
Atʰsatʰ ṫiraṫʰ har naam hæ kilvikʰ kaataṇhaaraa. ||2||
The Lord’s Name is the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and the Eradicator of sins. ||2||

ਜਲੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ਜਲੁ ਮਥੈ ਤਤੁ ਲੋੜੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
जलु बिलोवै जलु मथै ततु लोड़ै अंधु अगिआना ॥
Jal bilovæ jal maṫʰæ ṫaṫ loṛæ anḋʰ agi▫aanaa.
The blind ignorant mortal stirs the water and churns the water, wishing to obtain butter.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਦਧਿ ਮਥੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
गुरमती दधि मथीऐ अमृतु पाईऐ नामु निधाना ॥
Gurmaṫee ḋaḋʰ maṫʰee▫æ amriṫ paa▫ee▫æ naam niḋʰaanaa.
Following the Guru’s Teachings, one churns the cream, and the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam is obtained.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਪਸੂ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
मनमुख ततु न जाणनी पसू माहि समाना ॥३॥
Manmukʰ ṫaṫ na jaaṇnee pasoo maahi samaanaa. ||3||
The self-willed Manmukh is a beast; he does not know the essence of reality that is contained within himself. ||3||
|
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਰੀ ਮਰੁ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
हउमै मेरा मरी मरु मरि जंमै वारो वार ॥
Ha▫umæ méraa maree mar mar jammæ vaaro vaar.
Dying in egotism and self-conceit, one dies, and dies again, only to be reincarnated over and over again.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
गुर कै सबदे जे मरै फिरि मरै न दूजी वार ॥
Gur kæ sabḋé jé maræ fir maræ na ḋoojee vaar.
But when he dies in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, then he does not die, ever again.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭਿ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥
गुरमती जगजीवनु मनि वसै सभि कुल उधारणहार ॥४॥
Gurmaṫee jagjeevan man vasæ sabʰ kul uḋʰaaraṇhaar. ||4||
When he follows the Guru’s Teachings, and enshrines the Lord, the Life of the World, within his mind, he redeems all his generations. ||4||

ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
सचा वखरु नामु है सचा वापारा ॥
Sachaa vakʰar naam hæ sachaa vaapaaraa.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the true object, the true commodity.

ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
लाहा नामु संसारि है गुरमती वीचारा ॥
Laahaa naam sansaar hæ gurmaṫee veechaaraa.
The Naam is the only true profit in this world. Follow the Guru’s Teachings, and contemplate it.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਨਿਤ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
दूजै भाइ कार कमावणी नित तोटा सैसारा ॥५॥
Ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é kaar kamaavṇee niṫ ṫotaa sæsaaraa. ||5||
To work in the love of duality, brings constant loss in this world. ||5||

ਸਾਚੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥
साची संगति थानु सचु सचे घर बारा ॥
Saachee sangaṫ ṫʰaan sach saché gʰar baaraa.
True is one’s association, true is one’s place, and true is one’s hearth and home,
|
ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
सचा भोजनु भाउ सचु सचु नामु अधारा ॥
Sachaa bʰojan bʰaa▫o sach sach naam aḋʰaaraa.
and true is the food, when one has the support of the Naam.

ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
सची बाणी संतोखिआ सचा सबदु वीचारा ॥६॥
Sachee baṇee sanṫokʰi▫aa sachaa sabaḋ veechaaraa. ||6||
Contemplating the True Word of the Guru’s Bani, and the True Word of the Shabad, one becomes content. ||6||

ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਘਾਰਾ ॥
रस भोगण पातिसाहीआ दुख सुख संघारा ॥
Ras bʰogaṇ paaṫisaahee▫aa ḋukʰ sukʰ sangʰaaraa.
Enjoying princely pleasures, one shall be destroyed in pain and pleasure.

ਮੋਟਾ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਈਐ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
मोटा नाउ धराईऐ गलि अउगण भारा ॥
Motaa naa▫o ḋʰaraa▫ee▫æ gal a▫ugaṇ bʰaaraa.
Adopting a name of greatness, one strings heavy sins around his neck.

ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
माणस दाति न होवई तू दाता सारा ॥७॥
Maaṇas ḋaaṫ na hova▫ee ṫoo ḋaaṫaa saaraa. ||7||
Mankind cannot give gifts; You alone are the Giver of everything. ||7||

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਅਵਿਗਤੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
अगम अगोचरु तू धणी अविगतु अपारा ॥
Agam agochar ṫoo ḋʰaṇee avigaṫ apaaraa.
You are inaccessible and unfathomable; O Lord, You are imperishable and infinite.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਦਰੁ ਜੋਈਐ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
गुर सबदी दरु जोईऐ मुकते भंडारा ॥
Gur sabḋee ḋar jo▫ee▫æ mukṫé bʰandaaraa.
Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, seeking at the Lord’s Door, one finds the treasure of liberation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਸਾਚੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੧॥
नानक मेलु न चूकई साचे वापारा ॥८॥१॥
Naanak mél na chook▫ee saaché vaapaaraa. ||8||1||
O Nanak! This union is not broken, if one deals in the merchandise of Truth. ||8||1||

ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
बिखु बोहिथा लादिआ दीआ समुंद मंझारि ॥
Bikʰ bohiṫʰaa laaḋi▫aa ḋee▫aa samunḋ manjʰaar.
The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.

ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
कंधी दिसि न आवई ना उरवारु न पारु ॥
Kanḋʰee ḋis na aavee naa urvaar na paar.
The shore cannot be seen on this side, nor on the shore beyond.
|
ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
वंझी हाथि न खेवटू जलु सागरु असरालु ॥१॥
vanjʰee haaṫʰ na kʰévtoo jal saagar asraal. ||1||
There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||
|
ਬਾਬਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
बाबा जगु फाथा महा जालि ॥
Baabaa jag faaṫʰaa mahaa jaal.
O Baba, the world is caught in the great noose.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
गुर परसादी उबरे सचा नामु समालि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gur parsaadee ubré sachaa naam samaal. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
By Guru’s Grace, they are saved, contemplating the True Name. ||1||Pause||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
सतिगुरू है बोहिथा सबदि लंघावणहारु ॥
Saṫguroo hæ bohiṫʰaa sabaḋ langʰaavaṇhaar.
The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across.

ਤਿਥੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
तिथै पवणु न पावको ना जलु ना आकारु ॥
Ṫiṫʰæ pavaṇ na paavko naa jal naa aakaar.
There is neither wind nor fire, nor water nor form there.
|
ਤਿਥੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
तिथै सचा सचि नाइ भवजल तारणहारु ॥२॥
Ṫiṫʰæ sachaa sach naa▫é bʰavjal ṫaaraṇhaar. ||2||
The True Name of the True Lord is there; it carries them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
गुरमुखि लंघे से पारि पए सचे सिउ लिव लाइ ॥
Gurmukʰ langʰé sé paar pa▫é saché si▫o liv laa▫é.
The Gurmukhs reach the shore beyond, lovingly focusing on the True Lord.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
आवा गउणु निवारिआ जोती जोति मिलाइ ॥
Aavaa ga▫oṇ nivaari▫aa joṫee joṫ milaa▫é.
Their comings and goings are ended, and their light merges into the Light.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
गुरमती सहजु ऊपजै सचे रहै समाइ ॥३॥
Gurmaṫee sahj oopjæ saché rahæ samaa▫é. ||3||
Following the Guru’s Teachings, intuitive peace wells up within them, and they remain merged in the True Lord. ||3||

ਸਪੁ ਪਿੜਾਈ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ॥
सपु पिड़ाई पाईऐ बिखु अंतरि मनि रोसु ॥
Sap piṛaa▫ee paa▫ee▫æ bikʰ anṫar man ros.
The snake may be locked in a basket, but it is still poisonous, and the anger within its mind remains.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੀਜੈ ਦੋਸੁ ॥
पूरबि लिखिआ पाईऐ किस नो दीजै दोसु ॥
Poorab likʰi▫aa paa▫ee▫æ kis no ḋeejæ ḋos.
One obtains what is preordained; why does he blame others?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਰੜੁ ਜੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੰਤੋਸੁ ॥੪॥
गुरमुखि गारड़ु जे सुणे मंने नाउ संतोसु ॥४॥
Gurmukʰ gaaraṛ jé suṇé manné naa▫o sanṫos. ||4||
If one, as Gurmukh, hears and believes in the Name, the charm against poison, his mind becomes content. ||4||

ਮਾਗਰਮਛੁ ਫਹਾਈਐ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਵਤਾਇ ॥
मागरमछु फहाईऐ कुंडी जालु वताइ ॥
Maagarmachʰ fahaa▫ee▫æ kundee jaal vaṫaa▫é.
The crocodile is caught by the hook and line;

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਥਾ ਫਾਹੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ ॥
दुरमति फाथा फाहीऐ फिरि फिरि पछोताइ ॥
Ḋurmaṫ faaṫʰaa faa▫ee▫æ fir fir pachʰoṫaa▫é.
caught in the trap of evil-mindedness, he regrets and repents, again and again.
|
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
जंमण मरणु न सुझई किरतु न मेटिआ जाइ ॥५॥
Jamaṇ maraṇ na sujʰ▫ee kiraṫ na méti▫aa jaa▫é. ||5||
He does not understand birth and death; the inscription of one’s past actions cannot be erased. ||5||
|
ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
हउमै बिखु पाइ जगतु उपाइआ सबदु वसै बिखु जाइ ॥
Ha▫umæ bikʰ paa▫é jagaṫ upaa▫i▫aa sabaḋ vasæ bikʰ jaa▫é.
Injecting the poison of egotism, the world was created; with the Shabad enshrined within, the poison is eliminated.

ਜਰਾ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
जरा जोहि न सकई सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥
Jaraa johi na sak▫ee sach rahæ liv laa▫é.
Old age cannot torment one who remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
जीवन मुकतु सो आखीऐ जिसु विचहु हउमै जाइ ॥६॥
Jeevan mukaṫ so aakʰee▫æ jis vichahu ha▫umæ jaa▫é. ||6||
He alone is called Jivan-Mukta, liberated while still alive, from within whom egotism is eradicated. ||6||
