ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
लिखिआ पलै पाइ सो सचु जाणीऐ ॥
Likʰi▫aa palæ paa▫é so sach jaaṇee▫æ.
One whose preordained destiny is activated, comes to know the True Lord.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
हुकमी होइ निबेड़ु गइआ जाणीऐ ॥
Hukmee ho▫é nibéṛ ga▫i▫aa jaaṇee▫æ.
By God’s Command, it is ordained. When the mortal goes, he knows.

ਭਉਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥
भउजल तारणहारु सबदि पछाणीऐ ॥
Bʰa▫ojal ṫaaraṇhaar sabaḋ pachʰaaṇee▫æ.
Realize the Word of the Shabad, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਚੋਰ ਜਾਰ ਜੂਆਰ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀਐ ॥
चोर जार जूआर पीड़े घाणीऐ ॥
Chor jaar joo▫aar peeṛé gʰaaṇee▫æ.
Thieves, adulterers and gamblers are pressed like seeds in the mill.
|
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੜੑਵਾਣੀਐ ॥
निंदक लाइतबार मिले हड़्हवाणीऐ ॥
Ninḋak laa▫iṫbaar milé haṛĥvaaṇee▫æ.
Slanderers and gossipers are hand-cuffed.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੧॥
गुरमुखि सचि समाइ सु दरगह जाणीऐ ॥२१॥
Gurmukʰ sach samaa▫é so ḋargėh jaaṇee▫æ. ||21||
The Gurmukh is absorbed in the True Lord, and is famous in the Court of the Lord. ||21||

ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰੈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਮੂਰਖ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
नाउ फकीरै पातिसाहु मूरख पंडितु नाउ ॥
Naa▫o fakeeræ paaṫisaahu moorakʰ pandiṫ naa▫o.
The beggar is known as an emperor, and the fool is known as a religious scholar.

ਅੰਧੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਏਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਆਉ ॥
अंधे का नाउ पारखू एवै करे गुआउ ॥
Anḋʰé kaa naa▫o paarkʰoo évæ karé gu▫aa▫o.
The blind man is known as a seer; this is how people talk.
|
ਇਲਤਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਚਉਧਰੀ ਕੂੜੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਥਾਉ ॥
इलति का नाउ चउधरी कूड़ी पूरे थाउ ॥
Ilaṫ kaa naa▫o cha▫uḋʰree kooṛee pooré ṫʰaa▫o.
The trouble-maker is called a leader, and the liar is seated with honor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਆਉ ॥੧॥
नानक गुरमुखि जाणीऐ कलि का एहु निआउ ॥१॥
Naanak gurmukʰ jaaṇee▫æ kal kaa éhu ni▫aa▫o. ||1||
O Nanak! The Gurmukhs know that this is justice in the Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||1||

ਹਰਣਾਂ ਬਾਜਾਂ ਤੈ ਸਿਕਦਾਰਾਂ ਏਨੑਾ ਪੜੑਿਆ ਨਾਉ ॥
हरणां बाजां तै सिकदारां एन्हा पड़्हिआ नाउ ॥
Harṇaaⁿ baajaaⁿ ṫæ sikḋaaraaⁿ énĥaa paṛĥ▫aa naa▫o.
Deer, falcons and government officials are known to be trained and clever.
|
ਫਾਂਧੀ ਲਗੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਫਹਾਇਨਿ ਅਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥
फांधी लगी जाति फहाइनि अगै नाही थाउ ॥
Faaⁿḋʰee lagee jaaṫ fahaa▫in agæ naahee ṫʰaa▫o.
When the trap is set, they trap their own kind; hereafter they will find no place of rest.

ਸੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
सो पड़िआ सो पंडितु बीना जिन्ही कमाणा नाउ ॥
So paṛi▫aa so pandiṫ beenaa jinĥee kamaaṇaa naa▫o.
He alone is learned and wise, and he alone is a scholar, who practices the Name.

ਪਹਿਲੋ ਦੇ ਜੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਤਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਛਾਂਉ ॥
पहिलो दे जड़ अंदरि जंमै ता उपरि होवै छांउ ॥
Pahilo ḋé jaṛ anḋar jammæ ṫaa upar hovæ chʰaaⁿ▫o.
First, the tree puts down its roots, and then it spreads out its shade above.

ਰਾਜੇ ਸੀਹ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਕੁਤੇ ॥
राजे सीह मुकदम कुते ॥
Raajé seeh mukḋam kuṫé.
The kings are tigers, and their officials are dogs;
|
ਜਾਇ ਜਗਾਇਨੑਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਸੁਤੇ ॥
जाइ जगाइन्हि बैठे सुते ॥
Jaa▫é jagaa▫iniĥ bætʰé suṫé.
they go out and awaken the sleeping people to harass them.
|
ਚਾਕਰ ਨਹਦਾ ਪਾਇਨੑਿ ਘਾਉ ॥
चाकर नहदा पाइन्हि घाउ ॥
Chaakar nahḋaa paa▫iniĥ gʰaa▫o.
The public servants inflict wounds with their nails.
|
ਰਤੁ ਪਿਤੁ ਕੁਤਿਹੋ ਚਟਿ ਜਾਹੁ ॥
रतु पितु कुतिहो चटि जाहु ॥
Raṫ piṫ kuṫiho chat jaahu.
The dogs lick up the blood that is spilled.
|
ਜਿਥੈ ਜੀਆਂ ਹੋਸੀ ਸਾਰ ॥
जिथै जीआं होसी सार ॥
Jiṫʰæ jee▫aaⁿ hosee saar.
But there, in the Court of the Lord, all beings will be judged.
|
ਨਕੀ ਵਢੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ॥੨॥
नकीं वढीं लाइतबार ॥२॥
Nakeeⁿ vadʰeeⁿ laa▫iṫbaar. ||2||
Those who have violated the people’s trust will be disgraced; their noses will be cut off. ||2||

Pauree:

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਸਾਰ ॥
आपि उपाए मेदनी आपे करदा सार ॥
Aap upaa▫é méḋnee aapé karḋaa saar.
He Himself creates the world, and He himself takes care of it.
|
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਕਟੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
भै बिनु भरमु न कटीऐ नामि न लगै पिआरु ॥
Bʰæ bin bʰaram na katee▫æ naam na lagæ pi▫aar.
Without the Fear of God, doubt is not dispelled, and love for the Name is not embraced.
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
सतिगुर ते भउ ऊपजै पाईऐ मोख दुआर ॥
Saṫgur ṫé bʰa▫o oopjæ paa▫ee▫æ mokʰ ḋu▫aar.
Through the True Guru, the Fear of God wells up, and the Door of Salvation is found.
|
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
भै ते सहजु पाईऐ मिलि जोती जोति अपार ॥
Bʰæ ṫé sahj paa▫ee▫æ mil joṫee joṫ apaar.
Through the Fear of God, intuitive ease is obtained, and one’s light merges into the Light of the Infinite.

ਭੈ ਤੇ ਭੈਜਲੁ ਲੰਘੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
भै ते भैजलु लंघीऐ गुरमती वीचारु ॥
Bʰæ ṫé bʰæjal langʰee▫æ gurmaṫee veechaar.
Through the Fear of God, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over, reflecting on the Guru’s Teachings.
|
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
भै ते निरभउ पाईऐ जिस दा अंतु न पारावारु ॥
Bʰæ ṫé nirbʰa▫o paa▫ee▫æ jis ḋaa anṫ na paaraavaar.
Through the Fear of God, the Fearless Lord is found; He has no end or limitation.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
मनमुख भै की सार न जाणनी त्रिसना जलते करहि पुकार ॥
Manmukʰ bʰæ kee saar na jaaṇnee ṫarisnaa jalṫé karahi pukaar.
The self-willed Manmukhs do not appreciate the value of the Fear of God. Burning in desire, they weep and wail.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰ ॥੨੨॥
नानक नावै ही ते सुखु पाइआ गुरमती उरि धार ॥२२॥
Naanak naavæ hee ṫé sukʰ paa▫i▫aa gurmaṫee ur ḋʰaar. ||22||
O Nanak! Through the Name, peace is obtained by enshrining the Guru’s Teachings within the heart. ||22||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਰੂਪੈ ਕਾਮੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੁਖੈ ਸਾਦੈ ਗੰਢੁ ॥
रूपै कामै दोसती भुखै सादै गंढु ॥
Roopæ kaamæ ḋosṫee bʰukʰæ saaḋæ gandʰ.
Beauty and sexual desire are friends; hunger and tasty food are tied together.
|
ਲਬੈ ਮਾਲੈ ਘੁਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਚਲਿ ਊਂਘੈ ਸਉੜਿ ਪਲੰਘੁ ॥
लबै मालै घुलि मिलि मिचलि ऊंघै सउड़ि पलंघु ॥
Labæ maalæ gʰul mil michal ooⁿgʰæ sa▫uṛ palangʰ.
Greed is bound up in its search for wealth, and sleep will use even a tiny space as a bed.
|
ਭੰਉਕੈ ਕੋਪੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਫਕੜੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
भंउकै कोपु खुआरु होइ फकड़ु पिटे अंधु ॥
Bʰaⁿukæ kop kʰu▫aar ho▫é fakaṛ pité anḋʰ.
Anger barks and brings ruin on itself, blindly pursuing useless conflicts.
|
ਚੁਪੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਗੰਧੁ ॥੧॥
चुपै चंगा नानका विणु नावै मुहि गंधु ॥१॥
Chupæ changa naankaa viṇ naavæ muhi ganḋʰ. ||1||
It is good to be silent, O Nanak; without the Name, one’s mouth spews forth only filth. ||1||

ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਪੰਜੇ ਠਗ ॥
राजु मालु रूपु जाति जोबनु पंजे ठग ॥
Raaj maal roop jaaṫ joban panjé tʰag.
Royal power, wealth, beauty, social status and youth are the five thieves.
|
ਏਨੀ ਠਗੀਂ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਰਖੀ ਲਜ ॥
एनी ठगीं जगु ठगिआ किनै न रखी लज ॥
Énee tʰageeⁿ jag tʰagi▫aa kinæ na rakʰee laj.
These thieves have plundered the world; no one’s honor has been spared.
|
ਏਨਾ ਠਗਨੑਿ ਠਗ ਸੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
एना ठगन्हि ठग से जि गुर की पैरी पाहि ॥
Énaa tʰagniĥ tʰag sé jė gur kee pæree paahi.
But these thieves themselves are robbed, by those who fall at the Guru’s Feet.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਠੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
नानक करमा बाहरे होरि केते मुठे जाहि ॥२॥
Naanak karmaa baahré hor kéṫé mutʰé jaahi. ||2||
O Nanak! The multitudes who do not have good karma are plundered. ||2||
|

Pauree:

ਪੜਿਆ ਲੇਖੇਦਾਰੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ॥
पड़िआ लेखेदारु लेखा मंगीऐ ॥
Paṛi▫aa lékʰéḋaar lékʰaa mangee▫æ.
The learned and educated are called to account for their actions.
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਅਉਖਾ ਤੰਗੀਐ ॥
विणु नावै कूड़िआरु अउखा तंगीऐ ॥
viṇ naavæ kooṛi▫aar a▫ukʰaa ṫangee▫æ.
Without the Name, they are judged false; they become miserable and suffer hardship.
|
ਅਉਘਟ ਰੁਧੇ ਰਾਹ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਰੋਕੀਆਂ ॥
अउघट रुधे राह गलीआं रोकीआं ॥
A▫ugʰat ruḋʰé raah galee▫aaⁿ rokee▫aaⁿ.
Their path becomes treacherous and difficult, and their way is blocked.
|
ਸਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ॥
सचा वेपरवाहु सबदि संतोखीआं ॥
Sachaa véparvaahu sabaḋ sanṫokʰee▫aaⁿ.
Through the Shabad, the Word of the True and Independent Lord God, one becomes content.
|
ਗਹਿਰ ਗਭੀਰ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ॥
गहिर गभीर अथाहु हाथ न लभई ॥
Gahir gabʰeer aṫʰaahu haaṫʰ na labʰ▫ee.
The Lord is deep and profound and unfathomable; His depth cannot be measured.
|
ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ॥
मुहे मुहि चोटा खाहु विणु गुर कोइ न छुटसी ॥
Muhé muhi chotaa kʰaahu viṇ gur ko▫é na chʰutsee.
Without the Guru, the mortals are beaten and punched in the face and the mouth, and no one is released.
|
ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
पति सेती घरि जाहु नामु वखाणीऐ ॥
Paṫ séṫee gʰar jaahu naam vakʰaaṇee▫æ.
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one returns to his true home with honor.
|
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਹ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੩॥
हुकमी साह गिराह देंदा जाणीऐ ॥२३॥
Hukmee saah giraah ḋéⁿḋaa jaaṇee▫æ. ||23||
Know that the Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, gives sustenance and the breath of life. ||23||
