ਤੀਜੈ ਮੁਹੀ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਭੁਖ ਤਿਖਾ ਦੁਇ ਭਉਕੀਆ ॥
तीजै मुही गिराह भुख तिखा दुइ भउकीआ ॥
Ṫeejæ muhee giraah bʰukʰ ṫikʰaa ḋu▫é bʰa▫ukee▫aa.
In the third watch, both hunger and thirst bark for attention, and food is put into the mouth.

ਖਾਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਆਹ ਭੀ ਖਾਣੇ ਸਿਉ ਦੋਸਤੀ ॥
खाधा होइ सुआह भी खाणे सिउ दोसती ॥
Kʰaaḋʰaa ho▫é su▫aah bʰee kʰaaṇé si▫o ḋosṫee.
That which is eaten becomes dust, but they are still attached to eating.

ਚਉਥੈ ਆਈ ਊਂਘ ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟਿ ਪਵਾਰਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
चउथै आई ऊंघ अखी मीटि पवारि गइआ ॥
Cha▫uṫʰæ aa▫ee ooⁿgʰ akʰee meet pavaar ga▫i▫aa.
In the fourth watch, they become drowsy. They close their eyes and begin to dream.

ਭੀ ਉਠਿ ਰਚਿਓਨੁ ਵਾਦੁ ਸੈ ਵਰੑਿਆ ਕੀ ਪਿੜ ਬਧੀ ॥
भी उठि रचिओनु वादु सै वर्हिआ की पिड़ बधी ॥
Bʰee utʰ rachi▫on vaaḋ sæ varėh▫aa kee piṛ baḋʰee.
Rising up again, they engage in conflicts; they set the stage as if they will live for 100 years.
|
ਸਭੇ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤ ਸਭਿ ਜੇ ਅਠੀ ਭਉ ਹੋਇ ॥
सभे वेला वखत सभि जे अठी भउ होइ ॥
Sabʰé vélaa vakʰaṫ sabʰ jé atʰee bʰa▫o ho▫é.
If at all times, at each and every moment, they live in the fear of God -

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
नानक साहिबु मनि वसै सचा नावणु होइ ॥१॥
Naanak saahib man vasæ sachaa naavaṇ ho▫é. ||1||
O Nanak! The Lord dwells within their minds, and their cleansing bath is true. ||1||

ਸੇਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਹ ਜਿਨੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
सेई पूरे साह जिनी पूरा पाइआ ॥
Sé▫ee pooré saah jinee pooraa paa▫i▫aa.
They are the perfect kings, who have found the Perfect Lord.

ਅਠੀ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਰਹਨਿ ਇਕਤੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
अठी वेपरवाह रहनि इकतै रंगि ॥
Atʰee véparvaah rahan ikṫæ rang.
Twenty-four hours a day, they remain unconcerned, imbued with the Love of the One Lord.
|
ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਥਾਹ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ॥
दरसनि रूपि अथाह विरले पाईअहि ॥
Ḋarsan roop aṫʰaah virlé paa▫ee▫ah.
Only a few obtain the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of the Unimaginably Beauteous Lord.

ਕਰਮਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
करमि पूरै पूरा गुरू पूरा जा का बोलु ॥
Karam pooræ pooraa guroo pooraa jaa kaa bol.
Through the perfect karma of good deeds, one meets the Perfect Guru, whose speech is perfect.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਘਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੋਲੁ ॥੨॥
नानक पूरा जे करे घटै नाही तोलु ॥२॥
Naanak pooraa jé karé gʰatæ naahee ṫol. ||2||
O Nanak! When the Guru makes one perfect, one’s weight does not decrease. ||2||

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਰਿ ਮੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
जा तूं ता किआ होरि मै सचु सुणाईऐ ॥
Jaa ṫooⁿ ṫaa ki▫aa hor mæ sach suṇaa▫ee▫æ.
When You are with me, what more could I want? I speak only the Truth.

ਮੁਠੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਚੋਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
मुठी धंधै चोरि महलु न पाईऐ ॥
Mutʰee ḋʰanḋʰæ chor mahal na paa▫ee▫æ.
Plundered by the thieves of worldly affairs, she does not obtain the Mansion of His Presence.
|
ਏਨੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਠੋਰਿ ਸੇਵ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥
एनै चिति कठोरि सेव गवाईऐ ॥
Énæ chiṫ katʰor sév gavaa▫ee▫æ.
Being so stone-hearted, she has lost her chance to serve the Lord.
|
ਜਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਸੁ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਈਐ ॥
जितु घटि सचु न पाइ सु भंनि घड़ाईऐ ॥
Jiṫ gʰat sach na paa▫é so bʰann gʰaṛaa▫ee▫æ.
That heart, in which the True Lord is not found, should be torn down and re-built.
|
ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਵਟਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੁਲਾਈਐ ॥
किउ करि पूरै वटि तोलि तुलाईऐ ॥
Ki▫o kar pooræ vat ṫol ṫulaa▫ee▫æ.
How can she be weighed accurately, upon the scale of perfection?
|
ਕੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੈ ਘਟਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
कोइ न आखै घटि हउमै जाईऐ ॥
Ko▫é na aakʰæ gʰat ha▫umæ jaa▫ee▫æ.
No one will say that one becomes less by getting rid of egotism.
|
ਲਈਅਨਿ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖਿ ਦਰਿ ਬੀਨਾਈਐ ॥
लईअनि खरे परखि दरि बीनाईऐ ॥
La▫ee▫an kʰaré parakʰ ḋar beenaa▫ee▫æ.
The genuine are assayed, and accepted in the Court of the All-knowing Lord.

ਸਉਦਾ ਇਕਤੁ ਹਟਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧੭॥
सउदा इकतु हटि पूरै गुरि पाईऐ ॥१७॥
Sa▫uḋaa ikaṫ hat pooræ gur paa▫ee▫æ. ||17||
The genuine merchandise is found only in one shop-it is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||17||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਅਠੀ ਪਹਰੀ ਅਠ ਖੰਡ ਨਾਵਾ ਖੰਡੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥
अठी पहरी अठ खंड नावा खंडु सरीरु ॥
Atʰee pahree atʰ kʰand naavaa kʰand sareer.
Twenty-four hours a day, destroy the eight things, and in the ninth place, conquer the body.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਭਾਲਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥
तिसु विचि नउ निधि नामु एकु भालहि गुणी गहीरु ॥
Ṫis vich na▫o niḋʰ naam ék bʰaalėh guṇee gaheer.
Within the body are the nine treasures of the Name of the Lord-seek the depths of these virtues.

ਕਰਮਵੰਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ॥
करमवंती सालाहिआ नानक करि गुरु पीरु ॥
Karamvanṫee salaahi▫aa Naanak kar gur peer.
Those blessed with the karma of good actions praise the Lord. O Nanak! They make the Guru their spiritual teacher.

ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰਿ ਸਬਾਹ ਕੈ ਸੁਰਤਿਆ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
चउथै पहरि सबाह कै सुरतिआ उपजै चाउ ॥
Cha▫uṫʰæ pahar sabaah kæ surṫi▫aa upjæ chaa▫o.
In the fourth watch of the early morning hours, a longing arises in their higher consciousness.
|
ਤਿਨਾ ਦਰੀਆਵਾ ਸਿਉ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
तिना दरीआवा सिउ दोसती मनि मुखि सचा नाउ ॥
Ṫinaa ḋaree▫aavaa si▫o ḋosṫee man mukʰ sachaa naa▫o.
They are attuned to the river of life; the True Name is in their minds and on their lips.
|
ਓਥੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵੰਡੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਪਸਾਉ ॥
ओथै अमृतु वंडीऐ करमी होइ पसाउ ॥
Oṫʰæ amriṫ vandee▫æ karmee ho▫é pasaa▫o.
The Ambrosial Nectar is distributed, and those with good karma receive this gift.
|
ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਸੀਐ ਵੰਨੀ ਚੜੈ ਚੜਾਉ ॥
कंचन काइआ कसीऐ वंनी चड़ै चड़ाउ ॥
Kanchan kaa▫i▫aa kasee▫æ vannee chaṛæ chaṛaa▫o.
Their bodies become golden, and take on the color of spirituality.
|
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਰਾਫ ਕੀ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਤਾਉ ॥
जे होवै नदरि सराफ की बहुड़ि न पाई ताउ ॥
Jé hovæ naḋar saraaf kee bahuṛ na paa▫ee ṫaa▫o.
If the Jeweler casts His Glance of Grace, they are not placed in the fire again.
|
ਸਤੀ ਪਹਰੀ ਸਤੁ ਭਲਾ ਬਹੀਐ ਪੜਿਆ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
सती पहरी सतु भला बहीऐ पड़िआ पासि ॥
Saṫee pahree saṫ bʰalaa bahee▫æ paṛi▫aa paas.
Throughout the other seven watches of the day, it is good to speak the Truth, and sit with the spiritually wise.
|
ਓਥੈ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਘਟੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
ओथै पापु पुंनु बीचारीऐ कूड़ै घटै रासि ॥
Oṫʰæ paap punn beechaaree▫æ kooṛæ gʰatæ raas.
There, vice and virtue are distinguished, and the capital of falsehood is decreased.
|
ਓਥੈ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਖਰੇ ਕੀਚਹਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
ओथै खोटे सटीअहि खरे कीचहि साबासि ॥
Oṫʰæ kʰoté satee▫ah kʰaré keechėh saabaas.
There, the counterfeit are cast aside, and the genuine are cheered.
|
ਬੋਲਣੁ ਫਾਦਲੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
बोलणु फादलु नानका दुखु सुखु खसमै पासि ॥१॥
Bolaṇ faaḋal naankaa ḋukʰ sukʰ kʰasmæ paas. ||1||
Speech is vain and useless. O Nanak! Pain and pleasure are in the power of our Lord and Master. ||1||

ਪਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ ॥
पउणु गुरू पाणी पिता माता धरति महतु ॥
Pa▫uṇ guroo paaṇee piṫaa maaṫaa ḋʰaraṫ mahaṫ.
Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother of all.
|
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥
दिनसु राति दुइ दाई दाइआ खेलै सगल जगतु ॥
Ḋinas raaṫ ḋu▫é ḋaa▫ee ḋaa▫i▫aa kʰélæ sagal jagaṫ.
Day and night are the two nurses, in whose lap all the world is at play.
|
ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ਵਾਚੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
चंगिआईआ बुरिआईआ वाचे धरमु हदूरि ॥
Chang▫aa▫ee▫aa buri▫aa▫ee▫aa vaaché ḋʰaram haḋoor.
Good deeds and bad deeds-the record is read out in the Presence of the Lord of Dharma.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਕੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
करमी आपो आपणी के नेड़ै के दूरि ॥
Karmee aapo aapṇee ké néṛæ ké ḋoor.
According to their own actions, some are drawn closer, and some are driven farther away.
|
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗਏ ਮਸਕਤਿ ਘਾਲਿ ॥
जिनी नामु धिआइआ गए मसकति घालि ॥
Jinee naam ḋʰi▫aa▫i▫aa ga▫é maskaṫ gʰaal.
Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brow -
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੇਤੀ ਛੁਟੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
नानक ते मुख उजले होर केती छुटी नालि ॥२॥
Naanak ṫé mukʰ ujlé hor kéṫee chʰutee naal. ||2||
O Nanak! Their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many others are saved along with them! ||2||

ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦਸਿਆ ॥
सचा भोजनु भाउ सतिगुरि दसिआ ॥
Sachaa bʰojan bʰaa▫o saṫgur ḋasi▫aa.
The True Food is the Love of the Lord; the True Guru has spoken.
|
ਸਚੇ ਹੀ ਪਤੀਆਇ ਸਚਿ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ॥
सचे ही पतीआइ सचि विगसिआ ॥
Saché hee paṫee▫aa▫é sach vigsi▫aa.
With this True Food, I am satisfied, and with the Truth, I am delighted.
|
ਸਚੈ ਕੋਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਂਇ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥
सचै कोटि गिरांइ निज घरि वसिआ ॥
Sachæ kot giraaⁿ▫é nij gʰar vasi▫aa.
True are the cities and the villages, where one abides in the True Home of the self.
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਨਾਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਰਹਸਿਆ ॥
सतिगुरि तुठै नाउ प्रेमि रहसिआ ॥
Saṫgur ṫutʰæ naa▫o parém rėhsi▫aa.
When the True Guru is pleased, one receives the Lord’s Name, and blossoms forth in His Love.
|
ਸਚੈ ਦੈ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
सचै दै दीबाणि कूड़ि न जाईऐ ॥
Sachæ ḋæ ḋeebaaṇ kooṛ na jaa▫ee▫æ.
No one enters the Court of the True Lord through falsehood.
|
ਝੂਠੋ ਝੂਠੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਸੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥
झूठो झूठु वखाणि सु महलु खुआईऐ ॥
Jʰootʰo jʰootʰ vakʰaaṇ so mahal kʰu▫aa▫ee▫æ.
By uttering falsehood and only falsehood, the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence is lost.
