ਨਰ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
नर निहकेवल निरभउ नाउ ॥
Nar nihkéval nirbʰa▫o naa▫o.
The Name makes a man pure and fearless.

ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਕਰੇ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
अनाथह नाथ करे बलि जाउ ॥
Anaaṫʰah naaṫʰ karé bal jaa▫o.
It makes the masterless become the master of all. I am a sacrifice to him.

ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥
पुनरपि जनमु नाही गुण गाउ ॥५॥
Punrap janam naahee guṇ gaa▫o. ||5||
Such a person is not reincarnated again; he sings the Glories of God. ||5||
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
अंतरि बाहरि एको जाणै ॥
Anṫar baahar éko jaaṇæ.
Inwardly and outwardly, he knows the One Lord;
|
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
गुर कै सबदे आपु पछाणै ॥
Gur kæ sabḋé aap pachʰaaṇæ.
through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, he realizes himself.

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥੬॥
साचै सबदि दरि नीसाणै ॥६॥
Saachæ sabaḋ ḋar neesaaṇæ. ||6||
He bears the Banner and Insignia of the True Shabad in the Lord’s Court. ||6||
|
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
सबदि मरै तिसु निज घरि वासा ॥
Sabaḋ maræ ṫis nij gʰar vaasaa.
One who dies in the Shabad abides in his own home within.
|
ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਆਸਾ ॥
आवै न जावै चूकै आसा ॥
Aavæ na jaavæ chookæ aasaa.
He does not come or go in reincarnation, and his hopes are subdued.
|
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
गुर कै सबदि कमलु परगासा ॥७॥
Gur kæ sabaḋ kamal pargaasaa. ||7||
Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, his heart-lotus blossoms forth. ||7||
|
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
जो दीसै सो आस निरासा ॥
Jo ḋeesæ so aas niraasaa.
Whoever is seen, is driven by hope and despair,
|
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
काम क्रोध बिखु भूख पिआसा ॥
Kaam karoḋʰ bikʰ bʰookʰ pi▫aasaa.
by sexual desire, anger, corruption, hunger and thirst.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਲੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੭॥
नानक बिरले मिलहि उदासा ॥८॥७॥
Naanak birlé milėh uḋaasaa. ||8||7||
O Nanak! Those detached recluses who meet the Lord are so very rare. ||8||7||

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਐਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
ऐसो दासु मिलै सुखु होई ॥
Æso ḋaas milæ sukʰ ho▫ee.
Meeting such a slave, peace is obtained.
|
ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥
दुखु विसरै पावै सचु सोई ॥१॥
Ḋukʰ visræ paavæ sach so▫ee. ||1||
Pain is forgotten, when the True Lord is found. ||1||
|
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ॥
दरसनु देखि भई मति पूरी ॥
Ḋarsan ḋékʰ bʰa▫ee maṫ pooree.
Beholding the blessed vision of his darshan, my understanding has become perfect.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਚਰਨਹ ਧੂਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
अठसठि मजनु चरनह धूरी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Atʰsatʰ majan charnah ḋʰooree. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
The cleansing baths at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are in the dust of his feet. ||1||Pause||

ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
नेत्र संतोखे एक लिव तारा ॥
Néṫar sanṫokʰé ék liv ṫaaraa.
My eyes are contented with the constant love of the One Lord.
|
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
जिहवा सूची हरि रस सारा ॥२॥
Jihvaa soochee har ras saaraa. ||2||
My tongue is purified by the most sublime essence of the Lord. ||2||
|
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
सचु करणी अभ अंतरि सेवा ॥
Sach karṇee abʰ anṫar sévaa.
True are my actions, and deep within my being, I serve Him.
|
ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਿਆ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੩॥
मनु त्रिपतासिआ अलख अभेवा ॥३॥
Man ṫaripṫaasi▫aa alakʰ abʰévaa. ||3||
My mind is satisfied by the Inscrutable, Mysterious Lord. ||3||
|
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
जह जह देखउ तह तह साचा ॥
Jah jah ḋékʰ▫a▫u ṫah ṫah saachaa.
Wherever I look, there I find the True Lord.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਝਗਰਤ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥੪॥
बिनु बूझे झगरत जगु काचा ॥४॥
Bin boojʰé jʰagraṫ jag kaachaa. ||4||
Without understanding, the world argues in falsehood. ||4||
|
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
गुरु समझावै सोझी होई ॥
Gur samjʰaavæ sojʰee ho▫ee.
When the Guru instructs, understanding is obtained.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫॥
गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोई ॥५॥
Gurmukʰ virlaa boojʰæ ko▫ee. ||5||
How rare is that Gurmukh who understands? ||5||
|
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਖਵਾਲੇ ॥
करि किरपा राखहु रखवाले ॥
Kar kirpaa raakʰo rakʰvaalé.
Show Your Mercy, and save me, O Savior Lord!
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥੬॥
बिनु बूझे पसू भए बेताले ॥६॥
Bin boojʰé pasoo bʰa▫é béṫaalé. ||6||
Without understanding, people become beasts and demons. ||6||
|
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
गुरि कहिआ अवरु नही दूजा ॥
Gur kahi▫aa avar nahee ḋoojaa.
The Guru has said that there is no other at all.
|
ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਰਉ ਅਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥੭॥
किसु कहु देखि करउ अन पूजा ॥७॥
Kis kaho ḋékʰ kara▫o an poojaa. ||7||
So, tell me, who should I see, and who should I worship? ||7||
|
ਸੰਤ ਹੇਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
संत हेति प्रभि त्रिभवण धारे ॥
Sanṫ héṫ parabʰ ṫaribʰavaṇ ḋʰaaré.
For the sake of the Saints, God has established the three worlds.
|
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
आतमु चीनै सु ततु बीचारे ॥८॥
Aaṫam cheenæ so ṫaṫ beechaaré. ||8||
One who understands his own soul, contemplates the essence of reality. ||8||
|
ਸਾਚੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
साचु रिदै सचु प्रेम निवास ॥
Saach riḋæ sach parém nivaas.
One whose heart is filled with Truth and true love -
|
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ॥੯॥੮॥
प्रणवति नानक हम ता के दास ॥९॥८॥
Paraṇvaṫ Naanak ham ṫaa ké ḋaas. ||9||8||
prays Nanak, I am his servant. ||9||8||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਕੀਆ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
ब्रहमै गरबु कीआ नही जानिआ ॥
Barahmæ garab kee▫aa nahee jaani▫aa.
Brahma acted in pride, and did not understand.
|
ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪੜੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥
बेद की बिपति पड़ी पछुतानिआ ॥
Béḋ kee bipaṫ paṛee pachʰuṫaani▫aa.
Only when he was faced with the downfall of the Vedas did he repent.
|
ਜਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਤਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
जह प्रभ सिमरे तही मनु मानिआ ॥१॥
Jah parabʰ simré ṫahee man maani▫aa. ||1||
Remembering God in meditation, the mind is conciliated. ||1||
|
ਐਸਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
ऐसा गरबु बुरा संसारै ॥
Æsaa garab buraa sansaaræ.
Such is the horrible pride of the world.
|
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
जिसु गुरु मिलै तिसु गरबु निवारै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Jis gur milæ ṫis garab nivaaræ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
The Guru eliminates the pride of those who meet Him. ||1||Pause||
|
ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
बलि राजा माइआ अहंकारी ॥
Bal raajaa maa▫i▫aa ahaⁿkaaree.
Bal the King, in Maya and egotism,
|
ਜਗਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥
जगन करै बहु भार अफारी ॥
Jagan karæ baho bʰaar afaaree.
held his ceremonial feasts, but he was puffed up with pride.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛੇ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਰੀ ॥੨॥
बिनु गुर पूछे जाइ पइआरी ॥२॥
Bin gur poochʰé jaa▫é pa▫i▫aaree. ||2||
Without the Guru’s advice, he had to go to the underworld. ||2||
|
ਹਰੀਚੰਦੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
हरीचंदु दानु करै जसु लेवै ॥
Hareechanḋ ḋaan karæ jas lévæ.
Hari Chand gave in charity, and earned public praise.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਅਭੇਵੈ ॥
बिनु गुर अंतु न पाइ अभेवै ॥
Bin gur anṫ na paa▫é abʰévæ.
But without the Guru, he did not find the limits of the Mysterious Lord.
|
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੩॥
आपि भुलाइ आपे मति देवै ॥३॥
Aap bʰulaa▫é aapé maṫ ḋévæ. ||3||
The Lord Himself misleads people, and He Himself imparts understanding. ||3||
|
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ॥
दुरमति हरणाखसु दुराचारी ॥
Ḋurmaṫ harṇaakʰas ḋuraachaaree.
The evil-minded Harnaakhash committed evil deeds.
|
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਗਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥
प्रभु नाराइणु गरब प्रहारी ॥
Parabʰ naaraa▫iṇ garab par▫haaree.
God, the Lord of all, is the Destroyer of pride.
|
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
प्रहलाद उधारे किरपा धारी ॥४॥
Parahlaaḋ uḋʰaaré kirpaa ḋʰaaree. ||4||
He bestowed His Mercy, and saved Prahlaad. ||4||
|
ਭੂਲੋ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਚੇਤਿ ॥
भूलो रावणु मुगधु अचेति ॥
Bʰoolo raavaṇ mugaḋʰ achéṫ.
Raawan was deluded, foolish and unwise.
|
ਲੂਟੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੀਸ ਸਮੇਤਿ ॥
लूटी लंका सीस समेति ॥
Lootee lankaa sees saméṫ.
Sri Lanka was plundered, and he lost his head.
|
ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ॥੫॥
गरबि गइआ बिनु सतिगुर हेति ॥५॥
Garab ga▫i▫aa bin saṫgur héṫ. ||5||
He indulged in ego, and lacked the love of the True Guru. ||5||
|
ਸਹਸਬਾਹੁ ਮਧੁ ਕੀਟ ਮਹਿਖਾਸਾ ॥
सहसबाहु मधु कीट महिखासा ॥
Sahasbaahu maḋʰ keet mahikʰaasaa.
The Lord killed the thousand-armed Arjun, and the demons Madhu-keetab and Meh-khaasaa.

ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਲੇ ਨਖਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਸਾ ॥
हरणाखसु ले नखहु बिधासा ॥
Harṇaakʰas lé nakʰahu biḋʰaasaa.
He seized Harnaakhash and tore him apart with his nails.

ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥੬॥
दैत संघारे बिनु भगति अभिआसा ॥६॥
Ḋæṫ sangʰaaré bin bʰagaṫ abʰi▫aasaa. ||6||
The demons were slain; they did not practice devotional worship. ||6||
|
ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
जरासंधि कालजमुन संघारे ॥
Jaraasanḋʰ kaalajmun sangʰaaré.
The demons Jaraa-sandh and Kaal-jamun were destroyed.

ਰਕਤਬੀਜੁ ਕਾਲੁਨੇਮੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
रकतबीजु कालुनेमु बिदारे ॥
Rakaṫbeej kaaluném biḋaaré.
Rakat-beej and Kaal-naym were annihilated.
|
ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
दैत संघारि संत निसतारे ॥७॥
Ḋæṫ sangʰaar sanṫ nisṫaaré. ||7||
Slaying the demons, the Lord saved His Saints. ||7||
|
ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
आपे सतिगुरु सबदु बीचारे ॥
Aapé saṫgur sabaḋ beechaaré.
He Himself, as the True Guru, contemplates the Shabad.
