ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
जो तिसु भावै सो फुनि होइ ॥
Jo ṫis bʰaavæ so fun ho▫é.
Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.

ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
सुणि भरथरि नानकु कहै बीचारु ॥
Suṇ bʰarṫʰar Naanak kahæ beechaar.
Listen, O Bharthari Yogi - Nanak speaks after deliberation;

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥
निरमल नामु मेरा आधारु ॥८॥१॥
Nirmal naam méraa aaḋʰaar. ||8||1||
the Immaculate Name is my only Support. ||8||1||

ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
सभि जप सभि तप सभ चतुराई ॥
Sabʰ jap sabʰ ṫap sabʰ chaṫuraa▫ee.
All meditation, all austerities, and all clever tricks,
|
ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
ऊझड़ि भरमै राहि न पाई ॥
Oojʰaṛ bʰarmæ raahi na paa▫ee.
lead one to wander in the wilderness, but he does not find the Path.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
बिनु बूझे को थाइ न पाई ॥
Bin boojʰé ko ṫʰaa▫é na paa▫ee.
Without understanding, he is not approved;
|
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣੈ ਮਾਥੇ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
नाम बिहूणै माथे छाई ॥१॥
Naam bihooṇæ maaṫʰé chʰaa▫ee. ||1||
without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, ashes are thrown upon one’s head. ||1||
|
ਸਾਚ ਧਣੀ ਜਗੁ ਆਇ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
साच धणी जगु आइ बिनासा ॥
Saach ḋʰaṇee jag aa▫é binaasaa.
True is the Master; the world comes and goes.
|
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
छूटसि प्राणी गुरमुखि दासा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Chʰootas paraaṇee gurmukʰ ḋaasaa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
The mortal is emancipated, as Gurmukh, as the Lord’s slave. ||1||Pause||

ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
जगु मोहि बाधा बहुती आसा ॥
Jag mohi baaḋʰaa bahuṫee aasaa.
The world is bound by its attachments to many desires.
|
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਇਕਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
गुरमती इकि भए उदासा ॥
Gurmaṫee ik bʰa▫é uḋaasaa.
Through the Guru’s Teachings, some become free of desire.
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
अंतरि नामु कमलु परगासा ॥
Anṫar naam kamal pargaasaa.
Within them is the Naam, and their heart lotus blossoms forth.
|
ਤਿਨੑ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
तिन्ह कउ नाही जम की त्रासा ॥२॥
Ṫinĥ ka▫o naahee jam kee ṫaraasaa. ||2||
They have no fear of death. ||2||
|
ਜਗੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
जगु त्रिअ जितु कामणि हितकारी ॥
Jag ṫari▫a jiṫ kaamaṇ hiṫkaaree.
The world is entrapped by love for women.
|
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
पुत्र कलत्र लगि नामु विसारी ॥
Puṫar kalṫar lag naam visaaree.
Attached to children and wife, they forget the Naam.
|
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
बिरथा जनमु गवाइआ बाजी हारी ॥
Birṫʰaa janam gavaa▫i▫aa baajee haaree.
They waste this human life in vain, and lose the game in the gamble.
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
सतिगुरु सेवे करणी सारी ॥३॥
Saṫgur sévé karṇee saaree. ||3||
Serving the True Guru is the best occupation. ||3||
|
ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
बाहरहु हउमै कहै कहाए ॥
Baahrahu ha▫umæ kahæ kahaa▫é.
One who speaks egotistically in public,
|
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
अंदरहु मुकतु लेपु कदे न लाए ॥
Anḋrahu mukaṫ lép kaḋé na laa▫é.
never attains liberation within.
|
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
माइआ मोहु गुर सबदि जलाए ॥
Maa▫i▫aa moh gur sabaḋ jalaa▫é.
One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru’s Shabad,
|
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੪॥
निरमल नामु सद हिरदै धिआए ॥४॥
Nirmal naam saḋ hirḋæ ḋʰi▫aa▫é. ||4||
meditates forever within his heart on the Immaculate Naam. ||4||
|
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
धावतु राखै ठाकि रहाए ॥
Ḋʰaavaṫ raakʰæ tʰaak rahaa▫é.
He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control.
|
ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
सिख संगति करमि मिलाए ॥
Sikʰ sangaṫ karam milaa▫é.
The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace.
|
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
गुर बिनु भूलो आवै जाए ॥
Gur bin bʰoolo aavæ jaa▫é.
Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going.
|
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੫॥
नदरि करे संजोगि मिलाए ॥५॥
Naḋar karé sanjog milaa▫é. ||5||
Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||
|
ਰੂੜੋ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
रूड़ो कहउ न कहिआ जाई ॥
Rooṛo kaha▫o na kahi▫aa jaa▫ee.
I cannot describe the Beauteous Lord.
|
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਉ ਨਹ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
अकथ कथउ नह कीमति पाई ॥
Akaṫʰ kaṫʰa▫o nah keemaṫ paa▫ee.
I speak the unspoken; I cannot estimate His value.
|
ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੂਖ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
सभ दुख तेरे सूख रजाई ॥
Sabʰ ḋukʰ ṫéré sookʰ rajaa▫ee.
All pain and pleasure come by Your Will.
|
ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਈ ॥੬॥
सभि दुख मेटे साचै नाई ॥६॥
Sabʰ ḋukʰ mété saachæ naa▫ee. ||6||
All pain is eradicated by the True Name. ||6||
|
ਕਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਵਾਜਾ ਪਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
कर बिनु वाजा पग बिनु ताला ॥
Kar bin vaajaa pag bin ṫaalaa.
He plays the instrument without hands, and dances without feet.
|
ਜੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥
जे सबदु बुझै ता सचु निहाला ॥
Jé sabaḋ bujʰæ ṫaa sach nihaalaa.
But if he understands the Word of the Shabad, then he shall behold the True Lord.
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਭੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲਾ ॥
अंतरि साचु सभे सुख नाला ॥
Anṫar saach sabʰé sukʰ naalaa.
With the True Lord within the self, all happiness comes.
|
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੭॥
नदरि करे राखै रखवाला ॥७॥
Naḋar karé raakʰæ rakʰvaalaa. ||7||
Showering His Mercy, the Preserving Lord preserves him. ||7||
|
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
त्रिभवण सूझै आपु गवावै ॥
Ṫaribʰavaṇ soojʰæ aap gavaavæ.
He understands the three worlds; he eliminates his self-conceit.
|
ਬਾਣੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
बाणी बूझै सचि समावै ॥
Baṇee boojʰæ sach samaavæ.
He understands the Bani of the Word, and he is absorbed into the True Lord.
|
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
सबदु वीचारे एक लिव तारा ॥
Sabaḋ veechaaré ék liv ṫaaraa.
Contemplating the Shabad, he enshrines love for the One Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੨॥
नानक धंनु सवारणहारा ॥८॥२॥
Naanak ḋʰan savaaraṇhaaraa. ||8||2||
O Nanak! Blessed is the Lord, the Embellisher. ||8||2||

ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
लेख असंख लिखि लिखि मानु ॥
Lékʰ asaⁿkʰ likʰ likʰ maan.
There are innumerable writings; those who write them take pride in them.
|
ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਖਾਨੁ ॥
मनि मानिऐ सचु सुरति वखानु ॥
Man maanee▫æ sach suraṫ vakʰaan.
When one’s mind accepts the Truth, he understands, and speaks of it.
|
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
कथनी बदनी पड़ि पड़ि भारु ॥
Kaṫʰnee baḋnee paṛ paṛ bʰaar.
Words, spoken and read again and again, are useless loads.
|
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
लेख असंख अलेखु अपारु ॥१॥
Lékʰ asaⁿkʰ alékʰ apaar. ||1||
There are innumerable writings, but the Infinite Lord remains unwritten. ||1||
|
ਐਸਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
ऐसा साचा तूं एको जाणु ॥
Æsaa saachaa ṫooⁿ éko jaaṇ.
Know that such a True Lord is the One and only.
|
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
जंमणु मरणा हुकमु पछाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Jamaṇ marṇaa hukam pachʰaaṇ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
Understand that birth and death come according to the Lord’s Will. ||1||Pause||
|
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
माइआ मोहि जगु बाधा जमकालि ॥
Maa▫i▫aa mohi jag baaḋʰaa jamkaal.
Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death.
|
ਬਾਂਧਾ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਲਿ ॥
बांधा छूटै नामु सम्हालि ॥
Baaⁿḋʰaa chʰootæ naam samĥaal.
These bonds are released when one remembers the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
|
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
गुरु सुखदाता अवरु न भालि ॥
Gur sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa avar na bʰaal.
The Guru is the Giver of peace; do not look for any other.
|
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
हलति पलति निबही तुधु नालि ॥२॥
Halaṫ palaṫ nibhee ṫuḋʰ naal. ||2||
In this world, and the next, He shall stand by you. ||2||
|
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
सबदि मरै तां एक लिव लाए ॥
Sabaḋ maræ ṫaaⁿ ék liv laa▫é.
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad, embraces love for the One Lord.
|
ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
अचरु चरै तां भरमु चुकाए ॥
Achar charæ ṫaaⁿ bʰaram chukaa▫é.
One who mends the difficult mind, has his doubts dispelled.
|
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
जीवन मुकतु मनि नामु वसाए ॥
Jeevan mukaṫ man naam vasaa▫é.
He is Jivan Mukta - liberated while still alive; the Naam abides in his mind.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥
गुरमुखि होइ त सचि समाए ॥३॥
Gurmukʰ ho▫é ṫa sach samaa▫é. ||3||
Becoming Gurmukh, he merges into the True Lord. ||3||
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਸਾਜੀ ਗਗਨੁ ਅਕਾਸੁ ॥
जिनि धर साजी गगनु अकासु ॥
Jin ḋʰar saajee gagan akaas.
The One who created the earth and the Akashic ethers of the sky,
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭ ਥਾਪੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
जिनि सभ थापी थापि उथापि ॥
Jin sabʰ ṫʰaapee ṫʰaap uṫʰaap.
established all; He establishes and disestablishes.
|
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
सरब निरंतरि आपे आपि ॥
Sarab niranṫar aapé aap.
He Himself is permeating all.
|
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਪੂਛੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥
किसै न पूछे बखसे आपि ॥४॥
Kisæ na poochʰé bakʰsé aap. ||4||
He does not consult anyone; He Himself forgives. ||4||
|
ਤੂ ਪੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰੁ ॥
तू पुरु सागरु माणक हीरु ॥
Ṫoo pur saagar maaṇak heer.
You are the Ocean, overflowing with jewels and rubies.
|
ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥
तू निरमलु सचु गुणी गहीरु ॥
Ṫoo nirmal sach guṇee gaheer.
You are immaculate and pure, the true treasure of virtue.
