ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਕਾਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਭਵਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ॥
जोगी भोगी कापड़ी किआ भवहि दिसंतर ॥
Jogee bʰogee kaapṛee ki▫aa bʰavėh disanṫar.
Why do the Yogis, the revelers, and the beggars wander in foreign lands?

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੑਹੀ ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ॥੩॥
गुर का सबदु न चीन्हही ततु सारु निरंतर ॥३॥
Gur kaa sabaḋ na cheenhee ṫaṫ saar niranṫar. ||3||
They do not understand the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, and the essence of excellence within them. ||3||
|
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
पंडित पाधे जोइसी नित पड़्हहि पुराणा ॥
Pandiṫ paaḋʰé jo▫isee niṫ paṛėh puraaṇaa.
The Pandits, the religious scholars, the teachers and astrologers, and those who endlessly read the Puranas,

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
अंतरि वसतु न जाणन्ही घटि ब्रहमु लुकाणा ॥४॥
Anṫar vasaṫ na jaaṇanĥee gʰat barahm lukaaṇaa. ||4||
do not know what is within; God is hidden deep within them. ||4||
|
ਇਕਿ ਤਪਸੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
इकि तपसी बन महि तपु करहि नित तीरथ वासा ॥
Ik ṫapsee ban mėh ṫap karahi niṫ ṫiraṫʰ vaasaa.
Some penitents perform penance in the forests, and some dwell forever at sacred shrines.

ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
आपु न चीनहि तामसी काहे भए उदासा ॥५॥
Aap na cheenėh ṫaamsee kaahé bʰa▫é uḋaasaa. ||5||
The unenlightened people do not understand themselves - why have they become renunciates? ||5||
|
ਇਕਿ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
इकि बिंदु जतन करि राखदे से जती कहावहि ॥
Ik binḋ jaṫan kar raakʰ▫ḋé sé jaṫee kahaavėh.
Some control their sexual energy, and are known as celibates.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥
बिनु गुर सबद न छूटही भ्रमि आवहि जावहि ॥६॥
Bin gur sabaḋ na chʰooṫʰee bʰaram aavahi jaavėh. ||6||
But without the Guru’s Word, they are not saved, and they wander in reincarnation. ||6||
|
ਇਕਿ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
इकि गिरही सेवक साधिका गुरमती लागे ॥
Ik gir▫hee sévak saaḋʰikaa gurmaṫee laagé.
Some are householders, servants, and seekers, attached to the Guru’s Teachings.

ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਜਾਗੇ ॥੭॥
नामु दानु इसनानु द्रिड़ु हरि भगति सु जागे ॥७॥
Naam ḋaan isnaan ḋariṛ har bʰagaṫ so jaagé. ||7||
They hold fast to the Naam, to charity, to cleansing and purification; they remain awake in devotion to the Lord. ||7||
|
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥
गुर ते दरु घरु जाणीऐ सो जाइ सिञाणै ॥
Gur ṫé ḋar gʰar jaaṇee▫æ so jaa▫é siñaaṇæ.
Through the Guru, the Gate of the Lord’s Home is found, and that place is recognized.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੮॥੧੪॥
नानक नामु न वीसरै साचे मनु मानै ॥८॥१४॥
Naanak naam na veesræ saaché man maanæ. ||8||14||
Nanak does not forget the Naam; his mind has surrendered to the True Lord. ||8||14||

ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਲੇ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਸਚਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
मनसा मनहि समाइले भउजलु सचि तरणा ॥
Mansaa manėh samaa▫ilé bʰa▫ojal sach ṫarṇaa.
Stilling the desires of the mind, the mortal truly crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥
आदि जुगादि दइआलु तू ठाकुर तेरी सरणा ॥१॥
Aaḋ jugaaḋ ḋa▫i▫aal ṫoo tʰaakur ṫéree sarṇaa. ||1||
In the very beginning, and throughout the ages, You have been the Merciful Lord and Master; I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||
|
ਤੂ ਦਾਤੌ ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
तू दातौ हम जाचिका हरि दरसनु दीजै ॥
Ṫoo ḋaaṫou ham jaachikaa har ḋarsan ḋeejæ.
You are the Giver, and I am a mere beggar. Lord, please grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
गुरमुखि नामु धिआईऐ मन मंदरु भीजै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gurmukʰ naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ man manḋar bʰeejæ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam; the temple of his mind resounds with joy. ||1||Pause||
|
ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
कूड़ा लालचु छोडीऐ तउ साचु पछाणै ॥
Kooṛaa laalach chʰodee▫æ ṫa▫o saach pachʰaaṇæ.
Renouncing false greed, one comes to realize the Truth.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
गुर कै सबदि समाईऐ परमारथु जाणै ॥२॥
Gur kæ sabaḋ samaa▫ee▫æ parmaaraṫʰ jaaṇæ. ||2||
So, let yourself be absorbed in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, and know this supreme realization. ||2||
|
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੁਭਤਉ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥
इहु मनु राजा लोभीआ लुभतउ लोभाई ॥
Ih man raajaa lobʰee▫aa lubʰ▫ṫa▫o lobʰaa▫ee.
This mind is a greedy king, engrossed in greed.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
गुरमुखि लोभु निवारीऐ हरि सिउ बणि आई ॥३॥
Gurmukʰ lobʰ nivaaree▫æ har si▫o baṇ aa▫ee. ||3||
The Gurmukh eliminates his greed, and comes to an understanding with the Lord. ||3||
|
ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
कलरि खेती बीजीऐ किउ लाहा पावै ॥
Kalar kʰéṫee beejee▫æ ki▫o laahaa paavæ.
Planting the seeds in the rocky soil, how can one reap a profit?

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
मनमुखु सचि न भीजई कूड़ु कूड़ि गडावै ॥४॥
Manmukʰ sach na bʰeej▫ee kooṛ kooṛ gadaavæ. ||4||
The self-willed Manmukh is not pleased with Truth; the false are buried in falsehood. ||4||
|
ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
लालचु छोडहु अंधिहो लालचि दुखु भारी ॥
Laalach chʰodahu anḋʰiho laalach ḋukʰ bʰaaree.
So, renounce greed - you are blind! Greed only brings pain.

ਸਾਚੌ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
साचौ साहिबु मनि वसै हउमै बिखु मारी ॥५॥
Saachou saahib man vasæ ha▫umæ bikʰ maaree. ||5||
When the True Lord dwells within the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered. ||5||
|
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਮੂਸਹੁਗੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
दुबिधा छोडि कुवाटड़ी मूसहुगे भाई ॥
Ḋubiḋʰaa chʰod kuvaataṛee mooshugé bʰaa▫ee.
Renounce the evil way of duality, or you shall be plundered, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੬॥
अहिनिसि नामु सलाहीऐ सतिगुर सरणाई ॥६॥
Ahinis naam salaahee▫æ saṫgur sarṇaa▫ee. ||6||
Day and night, praise the Naam, in the Sanctuary of the True Guru’s protection. ||6||
|
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਫੀਕਾ ॥
मनमुख पथरु सैलु है ध्रिगु जीवणु फीका ॥
Manmukʰ paṫʰar sæl hæ ḋʰarig jeevaṇ feekaa.
The self-willed Manmukh is a rock, a stone. His life is cursed and useless.
|
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਕਾ ॥੭॥
जल महि केता राखीऐ अभ अंतरि सूका ॥७॥
Jal mėh kéṫaa raakʰee▫æ abʰ anṫar sookaa. ||7||
No matter now long a stone is kept under water, it still remains dry at its core. ||7||
|
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
हरि का नामु निधानु है पूरै गुरि दीआ ॥
Har kaa naam niḋʰaan hæ pooræ gur ḋee▫aa.
The Name of the Lord is the treasure; the Perfect Guru has given it to me.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
नानक नामु न वीसरै मथि अमृतु पीआ ॥८॥१५॥
Naanak naam na veesræ maṫʰ amriṫ pee▫aa. ||8||15||
O Nanak! One who does not forget the Naam, churns and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||8||15||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
आसा महला १ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਚਲੇ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਇਆ ॥
चले चलणहार वाट वटाइआ ॥
Chalé chalaṇhaar vaat vataa▫i▫aa.
The travelers travel from one road to another.
|
ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
धंधु पिटे संसारु सचु न भाइआ ॥१॥
Ḋʰanḋʰ pité sansaar sach na bʰaa▫i▫aa. ||1||
The world is engrossed in its entanglements, and does not appreciate the Truth. ||1||
|
ਕਿਆ ਭਵੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
किआ भवीऐ किआ ढूढीऐ गुर सबदि दिखाइआ ॥
Ki▫aa bʰavee▫æ ki▫aa dʰoodʰee▫æ gur sabaḋ ḋikʰaa▫i▫aa.
Why wander around, and why go searching, when the Guru’s Shabad reveals Him to us?

ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਸਰਜਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ममता मोहु विसरजिआ अपनै घरि आइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Mamṫaa moh visarji▫aa apnæ gʰar aa▫i▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
Leaving behind egotism and attachment, I have arrived at my own home. ||1||Pause||
|
ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
सचि मिलै सचिआरु कूड़ि न पाईऐ ॥
Sach milæ sachiaar kooṛ na paa▫ee▫æ.
Through Truth, one meets the True One; He is not obtained through falsehood.

ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥
सचे सिउ चितु लाइ बहुड़ि न आईऐ ॥२॥
Saché si▫o chiṫ laa▫é bahuṛ na aa▫ee▫æ. ||2||
Centering your consciousness on the True Lord, you shall not have to come into the world again. ||2||
|
ਮੋਇਆ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਰੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੂ ॥
मोइआ कउ किआ रोवहु रोइ न जाणहू ॥
Mo▫i▫aa ka▫o ki▫aa rovhu ro▫é na jaaṇhoo.
Why do you weep for the dead? You do not know how to weep.

ਰੋਵਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੂ ॥੩॥
रोवहु सचु सलाहि हुकमु पछाणहू ॥३॥
Rovhu sach salaahi hukam pachʰaaṇhoo. ||3||
Weep by praising the True Lord, and recognize His Command. ||3||
|
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
हुकमी वजहु लिखाइ आइआ जाणीऐ ॥
Hukmee vajahu likʰaa▫é aa▫i▫aa jaaṇee▫æ.
Blessed is the birth of one who is destined to abide by the Lord’s Command.

ਲਾਹਾ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ॥੪॥
लाहा पलै पाइ हुकमु सिञाणीऐ ॥४॥
Laahaa palæ paa▫é hukam siñaaṇee▫æ. ||4||
He obtains the true profit, realizing the Lord’s Command. ||4||
