ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰ ॥੨॥
हरि नामु न पाइआ जनमु बिरथा गवाइआ नानक जमु मारि करे खुआर ॥२॥
Har naam na paa▫i▫aa janam birṫʰaa gavaa▫i▫aa Naanak jam maar karé kʰu▫aar. ||2||
They do not obtain the Lord’s Name, and they waste away their lives in vain; O Nanak! The Messenger of Death punishes and dishonors them. ||2||

ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਤਦਹੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
आपणा आपु उपाइओनु तदहु होरु न कोई ॥
Aapṇaa aap upaa▫i▫on ṫaḋahu hor na ko▫ee.
He created Himself - at that time, there was no other.
|
ਮਤਾ ਮਸੂਰਤਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
मता मसूरति आपि करे जो करे सु होई ॥
Maṫaa masooraṫ aap karé jo karé so ho▫ee.
He consulted Himself for advice, and what He did came to pass.
|
ਤਦਹੁ ਆਕਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਤਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਈ ॥
तदहु आकासु न पातालु है ना त्रै लोई ॥
Ṫaḋahu aakaas na paaṫaal hæ naa ṫaræ lo▫ee.
At that time, there were no Akashic Ethers, no nether regions, nor the three worlds.

ਤਦਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
तदहु आपे आपि निरंकारु है ना ओपति होई ॥
Ṫaḋahu aapé aap nirankaar hæ naa opaṫ ho▫ee.
At that time, only the Formless Lord Himself existed - there was no creation.
|
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
जिउ तिसु भावै तिवै करे तिसु बिनु अवरु न कोई ॥१॥
Ji▫o ṫis bʰaavæ ṫivæ karé ṫis bin avar na ko▫ee. ||1||
As it pleased Him, so did He act; without Him, there was no other. ||1||

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
साहिबु मेरा सदा है दिसै सबदु कमाइ ॥
Saahib méraa saḋaa hæ ḋisæ sabaḋ kamaa▫é.
My Master is eternal. He is seen by practicing the Word of the Shabad.

ਓਹੁ ਅਉਹਾਣੀ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
ओहु अउहाणी कदे नाहि ना आवै ना जाइ ॥
Oh a▫uhaaṇee kaḋé naahi naa aavæ naa jaa▫é.
He never perishes; He does not come or go in reincarnation.
|
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੋ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
सदा सदा सो सेवीऐ जो सभ महि रहै समाइ ॥
Saḋaa saḋaa so sévee▫æ jo sabʰ mėh rahæ samaa▫é.
So, serve Him, forever and ever; He is contained in all.
|
ਅਵਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਿਉ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜੰਮੈ ਤੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
अवरु दूजा किउ सेवीऐ जंमै तै मरि जाइ ॥
Avar ḋoojaa ki▫o sévee▫æ jammæ ṫæ mar jaa▫é.
Why serve another who is born, and then dies?

ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਵਰੀ ਕਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
निहफलु तिन का जीविआ जि खसमु न जाणहि आपणा अवरी कउ चितु लाइ ॥
Nihfal ṫin kaa jeevi▫aa jė kʰasam na jaaṇėh aapṇaa avree ka▫o chiṫ laa▫é.
Fruitless is the life of those who do not know their Lord and Master, and who center their consciousness on others.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੇਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
नानक एव न जापई करता केती देइ सजाइ ॥१॥
Naanak év na jaap▫ee karṫaa kéṫee ḋé▫é sajaa▫é. ||1||
O Nanak! It cannot be known, how much punishment the Creator shall inflict on them. ||1||

ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਭੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ॥
सचा नामु धिआईऐ सभो वरतै सचु ॥
Sachaa naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ sabʰo varṫæ sach.
Meditate on the True Name; the True Lord is pervading everywhere.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ॥
नानक हुकमु बुझि परवाणु होइ ता फलु पावै सचु ॥
Naanak hukam bujʰ parvaaṇ ho▫é ṫaa fal paavæ sach.
O Nanak! By understanding the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, one becomes acceptable, and then obtains the fruit of Truth.

ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੨॥
कथनी बदनी करता फिरै हुकमै मूलि न बुझई अंधा कचु निकचु ॥२॥
Kaṫʰnee baḋnee karṫaa firæ hukmæ mool na bujʰ▫ee anḋʰaa kach nikach. ||2||
He wanders around babbling and speaking, but he does not understand the Lord’s Command at all. He is blind, the falsest of the false. ||2||

ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਉਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟੀ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
संजोगु विजोगु उपाइओनु स्रिसटी का मूलु रचाइआ ॥
Sanjog vijog upaa▫i▫on saristee kaa mool rachaa▫i▫aa.
Creating union and separation, He laid the foundations of the Universe.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
हुकमी स्रिसटि साजीअनु जोती जोति मिलाइआ ॥
Hukmee sarisat saajee▫an joṫee joṫ milaa▫i▫aa.
By His Command, the Lord of Light fashioned the Universe, and infused His Divine Light into it.

ਜੋਤੀ ਹੂੰ ਸਭੁ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
जोती हूं सभु चानणा सतिगुरि सबदु सुणाइआ ॥
Joṫee hooⁿ sabʰ chaanṇaa saṫgur sabaḋ suṇaa▫i▫aa.
From the Lord of Light, all light originates. The True Guru proclaims the Word of the Shabad.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु त्रै गुण सिरि धंधै लाइआ ॥
Barahmaa bisan mahés ṫaræ guṇ sir ḋʰanḋʰæ laa▫i▫aa.
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, under the influence of the three dispositions, were put to their tasks.

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਓਨੁ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
माइआ का मूलु रचाइओनु तुरीआ सुखु पाइआ ॥२॥
Maa▫i▫aa kaa mool rachaa▫i▫on ṫuree▫aa sukʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||2||
He created the root of Maya, and the peace obtained in the fourth state of consciousness. ||2||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਸੋ ਜਪੁ ਸੋ ਤਪੁ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
सो जपु सो तपु जि सतिगुर भावै ॥
So jap so ṫap jė saṫgur bʰaavæ.
That alone is chanting, and that alone is deep meditation, which is pleasing to the True Guru.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
सतिगुर कै भाणै वडिआई पावै ॥
Saṫgur kæ bʰaaṇæ vadi▫aa▫ee paavæ.
Pleasing the True Guru, glorious greatness is obtained.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
नानक आपु छोडि गुर माहि समावै ॥१॥
Naanak aap chʰod gur maahi samaavæ. ||1||
O Nanak! Renouncing self-conceit, one merges into the Guru. ||1||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
गुर की सिख को विरला लेवै ॥
Gur kee sikʰ ko virlaa lévæ.
How rare are those who receive the Guru’s Teachings.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੨॥
नानक जिसु आपि वडिआई देवै ॥२॥
Naanak jis aap vadi▫aa▫ee ḋévæ. ||2||
O Nanak! He alone receives it, whom the Lord Himself blesses with glorious greatness. ||2||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
माइआ मोहु अगिआनु है बिखमु अति भारी ॥
Maa▫i▫aa moh agi▫aan hæ bikʰam aṫ bʰaaree.
Emotional attachment to Maya is spiritual darkness; it is very difficult and such a heavy load.
|
ਪਥਰ ਪਾਪ ਬਹੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
पथर पाप बहु लदिआ किउ तरीऐ तारी ॥
Paṫʰar paap baho laḋi▫aa ki▫o ṫaree▫æ ṫaaree.
Loaded with so very many stones of sin, how can the boat cross over?
|
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥
अनदिनु भगती रतिआ हरि पारि उतारी ॥
An▫ḋin bʰagṫee raṫi▫aa har paar uṫaaree.
Those who are attuned to the Lord’s devotional worship night and day are carried across.
|
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਛਡਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
गुर सबदी मनु निरमला हउमै छडि विकारी ॥
Gur sabḋee man nirmalaa ha▫umæ chʰad vikaaree.
Under the Instruction of the Guru’s Shabad, one sheds egotism and corruption, and the mind becomes immaculate.
|
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
हरि हरि नामु धिआईऐ हरि हरि निसतारी ॥३॥
Har har naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ har har nisṫaaree. ||3||
Meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; the Lord, Har, Har, is our Saving Grace. ||3||

ਕਬੀਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੰਕੁੜਾ ਰਾਈ ਦਸਵੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
कबीर मुकति दुआरा संकुड़ा राई दसवै भाइ ॥
Kabeer mukaṫ ḋu▫aaraa sankuṛaa raa▫ee ḋasvæ bʰaa▫é.
O Kabir! The gate of liberation is narrow, less than one-tenth of a mustard seed.

ਮਨੁ ਤਉ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਾ ਨਿਕਸਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
मनु तउ मैगलु होइ रहा निकसिआ किउ करि जाइ ॥
Man ṫa▫o mægal ho▫é rahaa niksi▫aa ki▫o kar jaa▫é.
The mind has become as big as an elephant; how can it pass through this gate?
|
ਐਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੁਠਾ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ॥
ऐसा सतिगुरु जे मिलै तुठा करे पसाउ ॥
Æsaa saṫgur jé milæ ṫutʰaa karé pasaa▫o.
If one meets such a True Guru, by His Pleasure, He shows His Mercy.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੋਕਲਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
मुकति दुआरा मोकला सहजे आवउ जाउ ॥१॥
Mukaṫ ḋu▫aaraa moklaa sėhjé aava▫o jaa▫o. ||1||
Then, the gate of liberation becomes wide open, and the soul easily passes through. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਕਾ ਨਾਨੑਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
नानक मुकति दुआरा अति नीका नान्हा होइ सु जाइ ॥
Naanak mukaṫ ḋu▫aaraa aṫ neekaa naanĥaa ho▫é so jaa▫é.
O Nanak! The gate of liberation is very narrow; only the very tiny can pass through.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਚੁ ਦੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
हउमै मनु असथूलु है किउ करि विचु दे जाइ ॥
Ha▫umæ man asṫʰool hæ ki▫o kar vich ḋé jaa▫é.
Through egotism, the mind has become bloated. How can it pass through?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਹੀ ਸਭ ਆਇ ॥
सतिगुर मिलिऐ हउमै गई जोति रही सभ आइ ॥
Saṫgur mili▫æ ha▫umæ ga▫ee joṫ rahee sabʰ aa▫é.
Meeting the True Guru, egotism departs, and one is filled with the Divine Light.
