ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ ਕੈ ਮਦ ਮੈ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
जोबनु धनु प्रभता कै मद मै अहिनिसि रहै दिवाना ॥१॥
Joban ḋʰan parabʰ▫ṫaa kæ maḋ mæ ahinis rahæ ḋivaanaa. ||1||
In the pride of youth, wealth and glory, day and night, he remains intoxicated. ||1||
|
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਲਗਾਨਾ ॥
दीन दइआल सदा दुख भंजन ता सिउ मनु न लगाना ॥
Ḋeen ḋa▫i▫aal saḋaa ḋukʰ bʰanjan ṫaa si▫o man na lagaanaa.
God is merciful to the meek, and forever the Destroyer of pain, but the mortal does not center his mind on Him.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਕਿਨਹੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੨॥
जन नानक कोटन मै किनहू गुरमुखि होइ पछाना ॥२॥२॥
Jan Naanak kotan mæ kinhoo gurmukʰ ho▫é pachʰaanaa. ||2||2||
O servant Nanak! Among millions, only a rare few, as Gurmukh, realize God. ||2||2||

ਤਿਹ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਉ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ॥
तिह जोगी कउ जुगति न जानउ ॥
Ṫih jogee ka▫o jugaṫ na jaan▫o.
That Yogi does not know the way.

ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਛਾਨਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
लोभ मोह माइआ ममता फुनि जिह घटि माहि पछानउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Lobʰ moh maa▫i▫aa mamṫaa fun jih gʰat maahi pachʰaana▫o. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
Understand that his heart is filled with greed, emotional attachment, Maya and egotism. ||1||Pause||

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਹ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਲੋਹ ਸਮਾਨੋ ॥
पर निंदा उसतति नह जा कै कंचन लोह समानो ॥
Par ninḋaa usṫaṫ nah jaa kæ kanchan loh samaano.
One who does not slander or praise others, who looks upon gold and iron alike,

ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥੧॥
हरख सोग ते रहै अतीता जोगी ताहि बखानो ॥१॥
Harakʰ sog ṫé rahæ aṫeeṫaa jogee ṫaahi bakʰaano. ||1||
who is free from pleasure and pain - he alone is called a true Yogi. ||1||
|
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨੁ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਤ ਅਚਲ ਜਾਹਿ ਠਹਰਾਨੋ ॥
चंचल मनु दह दिसि कउ धावत अचल जाहि ठहरानो ॥
Chanchal man ḋah ḋis ka▫o ḋʰaavaṫ achal jaahi tʰėhraano.
The restless mind wanders in ten directions - it needs to be pacified and restrained.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੨॥੩॥
कहु नानक इह बिधि को जो नरु मुकति ताहि तुम मानो ॥२॥३॥
Kaho Naanak ih biḋʰ ko jo nar mukaṫ ṫaahi ṫum maano. ||2||3||
Says Nanak, whoever knows this technique is judged to be liberated. ||2||3||

ਅਬ ਮੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਕਰਉ ॥
अब मै कउनु उपाउ करउ ॥
Ab mæ ka▫un upaa▫o kara▫o.
Now, what efforts should I make?

ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਸੰਸਾ ਚੂਕੈ ਭਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
जिह बिधि मन को संसा चूकै भउ निधि पारि परउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Jih biḋʰ man ko sansaa chookæ bʰa▫o niḋʰ paar para▫o. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
How can I dispel the anxieties of my mind? How can I cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||1||Pause||

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਛੁ ਭਲੋ ਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਡਰਉ ॥
जनमु पाइ कछु भलो न कीनो ता ते अधिक डरउ ॥
Janam paa▫é kachʰ bʰalo na keeno ṫaa ṫé aḋʰik dara▫o.
Obtaining this human incarnation, I have done no good deeds; this makes me very afraid!

ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਨਹੀ ਗਾਏ ਯਹ ਜੀਅ ਸੋਚ ਧਰਉ ॥੧॥
मन बच क्रम हरि गुन नही गाए यह जीअ सोच धरउ ॥१॥
Man bach karam har gun nahee gaa▫é yėh jee▫a soch ḋʰara▫o. ||1||
In thought, word and deed, I have not sung the Lord’s Praises; this thought worries my mind. ||1||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਪਸੁ ਜਿਉ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰਉ ॥
गुरमति सुनि कछु गिआनु न उपजिओ पसु जिउ उदरु भरउ ॥
Gurmaṫ sun kachʰ gi▫aan na upji▫o pas ji▫o uḋar bʰara▫o.
I listened to the Guru’s Teachings, but spiritual wisdom did not take hold within me. Like a beast, I keep filling up my belly.

कहु नानक प्रभ बिरदु पछानउ तब हउ पतित तरउ ॥२॥४॥९॥९॥१३॥५८॥४॥९३॥

Says Nanak, O God, please confirm Your Law of Grace; for only then can I, the sinner, be saved. ||2||4||9||9||13||58||4||93||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
गुरु सागरु रतनी भरपूरे ॥
Gur saagar raṫnee bʰarpooré.
The Guru is the ocean, filled with pearls.
|
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
अमृतु संत चुगहि नही दूरे ॥
Amriṫ sanṫ chugėh nahee ḋooré.
The Saints gather in the Ambrosial Nectar; they do not go far away from there.
|
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
हरि रसु चोग चुगहि प्रभ भावै ॥
Har ras chog chugėh parabʰ bʰaavæ.
They taste the subtle essence of the Lord; they are loved by God.

ਸਰਵਰ ਮਹਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
सरवर महि हंसु प्रानपति पावै ॥१॥
Sarvar mėh hans paraanpaṫ paavæ. ||1||
Within this pool, the swans find their Lord, the Lord of their souls. ||1||
|
ਕਿਆ ਬਗੁ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਛਪੜੀ ਨਾਇ ॥
किआ बगु बपुड़ा छपड़ी नाइ ॥
Ki▫aa bag bapuṛaa chʰapṛee naa▫é.
What can the poor crane accomplish by bathing in the mud puddle?

ਕੀਚੜਿ ਡੂਬੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
कीचड़ि डूबै मैलु न जाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Keechaṛ doobæ mæl na jaa▫é. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
It sinks into the mire, and its filth is not washed away. ||1||Pause||
|
ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਚਰਨ ਧਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
रखि रखि चरन धरे वीचारी ॥
Rakʰ rakʰ charan ḋʰaré veechaaree.
After careful deliberation, the thoughtful person takes a step.
|
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
दुबिधा छोडि भए निरंकारी ॥
Ḋubiḋʰaa chʰod bʰa▫é nirankaaree.
Forsaking duality, he becomes a devotee of the Formless Lord.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਚਾਖੇ ॥
मुकति पदारथु हरि रस चाखे ॥
Mukaṫ paḋaaraṫʰ har ras chaakʰé.
He obtains the treasure of liberation, and enjoys the sublime essence of the Lord.
|
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥੨॥
आवण जाण रहे गुरि राखे ॥२॥
Aavaṇ jaaṇ rahé gur raakʰé. ||2||
His comings and goings end, and the Guru protects him. ||2||
|
ਸਰਵਰ ਹੰਸਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
सरवर हंसा छोडि न जाइ ॥
Sarvar hansaa chʰod na jaa▫é.
The swans do not leave this pool.
|
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
प्रेम भगति करि सहजि समाइ ॥
Parém bʰagaṫ kar sahj samaa▫é.
In loving devotional worship, they merge in the Celestial Lord.

ਸਰਵਰ ਮਹਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਹੰਸ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ॥
सरवर महि हंसु हंस महि सागरु ॥
Sarvar mėh hans hans mėh saagar.
The swans are in the pool, and the pool is in the swans.
|
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਆਦਰੁ ॥੩॥
अकथ कथा गुर बचनी आदरु ॥३॥
Akaṫʰ kaṫʰaa gur bachnee aaḋar. ||3||
They speak the Unspoken Speech, and they honor and revere the Guru’s Word. ||3||
|
ਸੁੰਨ ਮੰਡਲ ਇਕੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਬੈਸੇ ॥
सुंन मंडल इकु जोगी बैसे ॥
Sunn mandal ik jogee bæsé.
The Yogi, the Primal Lord, sits within the celestial sphere of deepest Samadhi.
|
ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋਊ ਕੈਸੇ ॥
नारि न पुरखु कहहु कोऊ कैसे ॥
Naar na purakʰ kahhu ko▫oo kæsé.
He is not male, and He is not female; how can anyone describe Him?

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
त्रिभवण जोति रहे लिव लाई ॥
Ṫaribʰavaṇ joṫ rahé liv laa▫ee.
The three worlds continue to center their attention on His Light.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥ ਸਚੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥
सुरि नर नाथ सचे सरणाई ॥४॥
Sur nar naaṫʰ saché sarṇaa▫ee. ||4||
The silent sages and the Yogic masters seek the Sanctuary of the True Lord. ||4||
|
ਆਨੰਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਅਨਾਥ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥
आनंद मूलु अनाथ अधारी ॥
Aananḋ mool anaaṫʰ aḋʰaaree.
The Lord is the source of bliss, the support of the helpless.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
गुरमुखि भगति सहजि बीचारी ॥
Gurmukʰ bʰagaṫ sahj beechaaree.
The Gurmukhs worship and contemplate the Celestial Lord.
|
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਭੈ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰੇ ॥
भगति वछल भै काटणहारे ॥
Bʰagaṫ vachʰal bʰæ kaataṇhaaré.
God is the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear.
|
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਗੁ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
हउमै मारि मिले पगु धारे ॥५॥
Ha▫umæ maar milé pag ḋʰaaré. ||5||
Subduing ego, one meets the Lord, and places his feet on the Path. ||5||
|
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥
अनिक जतन करि कालु संताए ॥
Anik jaṫan kar kaal sanṫaa▫é.
He makes many efforts, but still, the Messenger of Death tortures him.
|
ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ॥
मरणु लिखाइ मंडल महि आए ॥
Maraṇ likʰaa▫é mandal mėh aa▫é.
Destined only to die, he comes into the world.
|
