ਮਲੁ ਕੂੜੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਤਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥
मलु कूड़ी नामि उतारीअनु जपि नामु होआ सचिआरु ॥
Mal kooṛee naam uṫaaree▫an jap naam ho▫aa sachiaar.
The Naam washes off the filth of falsehood; chanting the Naam, one becomes truthful.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਏਹਿ ਚਲਤ ਹਹਿ ਸੋ ਜੀਵਉ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
जन नानक जिस दे एहि चलत हहि सो जीवउ देवणहारु ॥२॥
Jan Naanak jis ḋé éhi chalaṫ hėh so jeeva▫o ḋévaṇhaar. ||2||
O servant Nanak! Wondrous are the plays of the Lord, the Giver of life. ||2||

ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
तुधु जेवडु दाता नाहि किसु आखि सुणाईऐ ॥
Ṫuḋʰ jévad ḋaaṫaa naahi kis aakʰ suṇaa▫ee▫æ.
You are the Great Giver; no other is as great as You. Unto whom should I speak and talk?

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
गुर परसादी पाइ जिथहु हउमै जाईऐ ॥
Gur parsaadee paa▫é jiṫʰahu ha▫umæ jaa▫ee▫æ.
By Guru’s Grace, I find You; You eradicate egotism from within.

ਰਸ ਕਸ ਸਾਦਾ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈਐ ॥
रस कस सादा बाहरा सची वडिआईऐ ॥
Ras kas saaḋaa baahraa sachee vadi▫aa▫ee▫æ.
You are beyond sweet and salty flavors; True is Your glorious greatness.
|
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਇ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ॥
जिस नो बखसे तिसु देइ आपि लए मिलाईऐ ॥
Jis no bakʰsé ṫis ḋé▫é aap la▫é milaa▫ee▫æ.
You bless those whom You forgive, and unite them with Yourself.

ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਿਆਈ ॥੯॥
घट अंतरि अमृतु रखिओनु गुरमुखि किसै पिआई ॥९॥
Gʰat anṫar amriṫ rakʰi▫on gurmukʰ kisæ pi▫aa▫ee. ||9||
You have placed the Ambrosial Nectar deep within the heart; the Gurmukh drinks it in. ||9||

ਬਾਬਾਣੀਆ ਕਹਾਣੀਆ ਪੁਤ ਸਪੁਤ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
बाबाणीआ कहाणीआ पुत सपुत करेनि ॥
Baabaaṇee▫aa kahaaṇee▫aa puṫ sapuṫ karén.
The stories of one’s ancestors make the children good children.
|
ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਸੇਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
जि सतिगुर भावै सु मंनि लैनि सेई करम करेनि ॥
Jė saṫgur bʰaavæ so man læn sé▫ee karam karén.
They accept what is pleasing to the Will of the True Guru, and act accordingly.
|
ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬਿਆਸ ਸੁਕ ਨਾਰਦ ਬਚਨ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
जाइ पुछहु सिम्रिति सासत बिआस सुक नारद बचन सभ स्रिसटि करेनि ॥
Jaa▫é puchʰahu simriṫ saasaṫ bi▫aas suk naaraḋ bachan sabʰ sarisat karén.
Go and consult the Smritis, the Shastras, the writings of Vyaas, Suk Dayv, Naarad, and all those who preach to the world.

ਸਚੈ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਲਗੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲੇਨਿ ॥
सचै लाए सचि लगे सदा सचु समालेनि ॥
Sachæ laa▫é sach lagé saḋaa sach samaalén.
Those, whom the True Lord attaches, are attached to the Truth; they contemplate the True Name forever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਏ ਜਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇਨਿ ॥੧॥
नानक आए से परवाणु भए जि सगले कुल तारेनि ॥१॥
Naanak aa▫é sé parvaaṇ bʰa▫é jė saglé kul ṫaarén. ||1||
O Nanak! Their coming into the world is approved; they redeem all their ancestors. ||1||

ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਸਿਖ ਭੀ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
गुरू जिना का अंधुला सिख भी अंधे करम करेनि ॥
Guroo jinaa kaa anḋʰulaa sikʰ bʰee anḋʰé karam karén.
The disciples whose teacher is blind, act blindly as well.
|
ਓਇ ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲਨਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਨਿਤ ਝੂਠੋ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲੇਨਿ ॥
ओइ भाणै चलनि आपणै नित झूठो झूठु बोलेनि ॥
O▫é bʰaaṇæ chalan aapṇæ niṫ jʰootʰo jʰootʰ bolén.
They walk according to their own wills, and continually speak falsehood and lies.
|
ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
कूड़ु कुसतु कमावदे पर निंदा सदा करेनि ॥
Kooṛ kusaṫ kamaavḋé par ninḋaa saḋaa karén.
They practice falsehood and deception, and endlessly slander others.
|
ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਡੋਬੇਨਿ ॥
ओइ आपि डुबे पर निंदका सगले कुल डोबेनि ॥
O▫é aap dubé par ninḋkaa saglé kul dobén.
Slandering others, they drown themselves, and drown all their generations as well.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਤੁ ਓਇ ਲਾਏ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗੇ ਉਇ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥੨॥
नानक जितु ओइ लाए तितु लगे उइ बपुड़े किआ करेनि ॥२॥
Naanak jiṫ o▫é laa▫é ṫiṫ lagé u▫é bapuṛé ki▫aa karén. ||2||
O Nanak! Whatever the Lord links them to, to that they are linked; what can the poor creatures do? ||2||

ਸਭ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਦਾ ਜੇਤੀ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਕੀਤੀ ॥
सभ नदरी अंदरि रखदा जेती सिसटि सभ कीती ॥
Sabʰ naḋree anḋar rakʰ▫ḋaa jéṫee sisat sabʰ keeṫee.
He keeps all under His Gaze; He created the entire Universe.
|
ਇਕਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕੁਸਤਿ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ॥
इकि कूड़ि कुसति लाइअनु मनमुख विगूती ॥
Ik kooṛ kusaṫ laa▫i▫an manmukʰ vigooṫee.
He has linked some to falsehood and deception; these self-willed Manmukhs are plundered.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ॥
गुरमुखि सदा धिआईऐ अंदरि हरि प्रीती ॥
Gurmukʰ saḋaa ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ anḋar har pareeṫee.
The Gurmukhs meditate on the Lord forever; their inner beings are filled with love.
|
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨੑ ਵਾਤਿ ਸਿਪੀਤੀ ॥
जिन कउ पोतै पुंनु है तिन्ह वाति सिपीती ॥
Jin ka▫o poṫæ punn hæ ṫinĥ vaaṫ sipeeṫee.
Those who have the treasure of virtue, chant the Praises of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਈ ॥੧੦॥
नानक नामु धिआईऐ सचु सिफति सनाई ॥१०॥
Naanak naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ sach sifaṫ sanaa▫ee. ||10||
O Nanak! Meditate on the Naam, and the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. ||10||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
सलोकु मः १ ॥
Salok mėhlaa 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਤੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
सती पापु करि सतु कमाहि ॥
Saṫee paap kar saṫ kamaahi.
Men of charity gather wealth by committing sins, and then give it away in donations to charity.
|
ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਦੇਵਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
गुर दीखिआ घरि देवण जाहि ॥
Gur ḋeekʰi▫aa gʰar ḋévaṇ jaahi.
Their spiritual teachers go to their homes to instruct them.
|
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਭਾਉ ॥
इसतरी पुरखै खटिऐ भाउ ॥
Isṫaree purkʰæ kʰati▫æ bʰaa▫o.
The woman loves the man only for his wealth;
|
ਭਾਵੈ ਆਵਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
भावै आवउ भावै जाउ ॥
Bʰaavæ aava▫o bʰaavæ jaa▫o.
they come and go as they please.
|
ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
सासतु बेदु न मानै कोइ ॥
Saasaṫ béḋ na maanæ ko▫é.
No one obeys the Shastras or the Vedas.
|
ਆਪੋ ਆਪੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
आपो आपै पूजा होइ ॥
Aapo aapæ poojaa ho▫é.
Everyone worships himself.
|
ਕਾਜੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਆਇ ॥
काजी होइ कै बहै निआइ ॥
Kaajee ho▫é kæ bahæ ni▫aa▫é.
Becoming judges, they sit and administer justice.
|
ਫੇਰੇ ਤਸਬੀ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
फेरे तसबी करे खुदाइ ॥
Féré ṫasbee karé kʰuḋaa▫é.
They chant on their malas, and call upon God.
|
ਵਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਹਕੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
वढी लै कै हकु गवाए ॥
vadʰee læ kæ hak gavaa▫é.
They accept bribes, and block justice.
|
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪੁਛੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
जे को पुछै ता पड़ि सुणाए ॥
Jé ko puchʰæ ṫaa paṛ suṇaa▫é.
If someone asks them, they read quotations from their books.
|
ਤੁਰਕ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਕਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
तुरक मंत्रु कनि रिदै समाहि ॥
Ṫurak manṫar kan riḋæ samaahi.
The Muslim scriptures are in their ears and in their hearts.
|
ਲੋਕ ਮੁਹਾਵਹਿ ਚਾੜੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
लोक मुहावहि चाड़ी खाहि ॥
Lok muhaavėh chaaṛee kʰaahi.
They plunder the people, and engage in gossip and flattery.
|
ਚਉਕਾ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
चउका दे कै सुचा होइ ॥
Cha▫ukaa ḋé kæ suchaa ho▫é.
They anoint their kitchens to try to become pure.
|
ਐਸਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
ऐसा हिंदू वेखहु कोइ ॥
Æsaa hinḋoo vékʰhu ko▫é.
Behold, such is the Hindu.
|
ਜੋਗੀ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਭੂਤ ॥
जोगी गिरही जटा बिभूत ॥
Jogee gir▫hee jataa bibʰooṫ.
The Yogi, with matted hair and ashes on his body, has become a householder.
|
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥
आगै पाछै रोवहि पूत ॥
Aagæ paachʰæ rovėh pooṫ.
The children weep in front of him and behind him.
|
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
जोगु न पाइआ जुगति गवाई ॥
Jog na paa▫i▫aa jugaṫ gavaa▫ee.
He does not attain Yoga - he has lost his way.
|
ਕਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥
कितु कारणि सिरि छाई पाई ॥
Kiṫ kaaraṇ sir chʰaa▫ee paa▫ee.
Why does he apply ashes to his forehead?
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
नानक कलि का एहु परवाणु ॥
Naanak kal kaa éhu parvaaṇ.
O Nanak! This is the sign of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;

ਆਪੇ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
आपे आखणु आपे जाणु ॥१॥
Aapé aakʰaṇ aapé jaaṇ. ||1||
everyone says that he himself knows. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਵੈ ॥
हिंदू कै घरि हिंदू आवै ॥
Hinḋoo kæ gʰar hinḋoo aavæ.
The Hindu comes to the house of a Hindu.
|
ਸੂਤੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਪੜਿ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
सूतु जनेऊ पड़ि गलि पावै ॥
Sooṫ jané▫oo paṛ gal paavæ.
He puts the sacred thread around his neck and reads the scriptures.
|
ਸੂਤੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
सूतु पाइ करे बुरिआई ॥
Sooṫ paa▫é karé buri▫aa▫ee.
He puts on the thread, but does evil deeds.
|
ਨਾਤਾ ਧੋਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
नाता धोता थाइ न पाई ॥
Naaṫaa ḋʰoṫaa ṫʰaa▫é na paa▫ee.
His cleansings and washings will not be approved.
|
ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
मुसलमानु करे वडिआई ॥
Musalmaan karé vadi▫aa▫ee.
The Muslim glorifies his own faith.
