ਪਰਬਤੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਾਉ ॥

Parbaṫ su▫inaa rupaa hovæ heeré laal jaṛaa▫o.

if the mountains became gold and silver, studded with gems and jewels -

ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੧॥

Bʰee ṫooⁿhæ salaahṇaa aakʰaṇ lahæ na chaa▫o. ||1||

even then, I would worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮੇਵਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਗਰੁੜਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

Bʰaar atʰaarah mévaa hovæ garuṛaa ho▫é su▫aa▫o.

If all the eighteen loads of vegetation became fruits and the growing grass became sweet rice;

ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥

Chanḋ sooraj ḋu▫é firḋé rakʰee▫ahi nihchal hovæ ṫʰaa▫o.

if I were able to stop the sun and the moon in their orbits and hold them perfectly steady -

ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥

Bʰee ṫooⁿhæ salaahṇaa aakʰaṇ lahæ na chaa▫o. ||2||

even then, I would worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||2||

ਜੇ ਦੇਹੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਪਾਪ ਗਰਹ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

Jé ḋéhæ ḋukʰ laa▫ee▫æ paap garah ḋu▫é raahu.

If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars;

ਰਤੁ ਪੀਣੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਿਰੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਭਾਉ ॥

Raṫ peeṇé raajé siræ upar rakʰee▫ahi évæ jaapæ bʰaa▫o.

and if the blood-sucking kings were to hold power over me -

ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੩॥

Bʰee ṫooⁿhæ salaahṇaa aakʰaṇ lahæ na chaa▫o. ||3||

even if this were my condition, I would still worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||3||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਾਉ ॥

Agee paalaa kapaṛ hovæ kʰaaṇaa hovæ vaa▫o.

If fire and ice were my clothes, and the wind was my food;

ਸੁਰਗੈ ਦੀਆ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਇਸਤਰੀਆ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੋ ਜਾਉ ॥

Surgæ ḋee▫aa mohṇee▫aa isṫaree▫aa hovan Naanak sabʰo jaa▫o.

and even if the enticing heavenly beauties were my wives, O Nanak-all this shall pass away!

ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੪॥

Bʰee ṫoohæ salaahṇaa aakʰaṇ lahæ na chaa▫o. ||4||

Even then, I would worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||4||

ਪਵੜੀ ॥

Pavṛee.

Pauree:

ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਗੈਬਾਨਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ॥

Baḋfælee gæbaanaa kʰasam na jaaṇ▫ee.

The foolish demon, who does evil deeds, does not know his Lord and Master.

ਸੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ॥

So kahee▫æ ḋévaanaa aap na pachʰaaṇ▫ee.

Call him a mad-man, if he does not understand himself.

ਕਲਹਿ ਬੁਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਵਾਦੇ ਖਪੀਐ ॥

Kalėh buree sansaar vaaḋé kʰapee▫æ.

The strife of this world is evil; these struggles are consuming it.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਪਚੀਐ ॥

viṇ naavæ vékaar bʰarmé pachee▫æ.

Without the Lord’s Name, life is worthless. Through doubt, the people are being destroyed.

ਰਾਹ ਦੋਵੈ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਝਸੀ ॥

Raah ḋovæ ik jaaṇæ so▫ee sijʰsee.

One who recognizes that all spiritual paths lead to the One shall be emancipated.

ਕੁਫਰ ਗੋਅ ਕੁਫਰਾਣੈ ਪਇਆ ਦਝਸੀ ॥

Kufar go▫a kufraaṇæ pa▫i▫aa ḋajʰsee.

One who speaks lies shall fall into hell and burn.

ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥

Sabʰ ḋunee▫aa sub▫haan sach samaa▫ee▫æ.

In all the world, the most blessed and sanctified are those who remain absorbed in Truth.

ਸਿਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਵਾਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੯॥

Sijʰæ ḋar ḋeevaan aap gavaa▫ee▫æ. ||9||

One who eliminates selfishness and conceit is redeemed in the Court of the Lord. ||9||

ਮਃ ੧ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

Mėhlaa 1 salok.

First Mehl, Shalok:

ਸੋ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥

So jeevi▫aa jis man vasi▫aa so▫é.

They alone are truly alive, whose minds are filled with the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

Naanak avar na jeevæ ko▫é.

O Nanak! No one else is truly alive;

ਜੇ ਜੀਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਲਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

Jé jeevæ paṫ laṫʰee jaa▫é.

those who merely live shall depart in dishonor;

ਸਭੁ ਹਰਾਮੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

Sabʰ haraam jéṫaa kichʰ kʰaa▫é.

everything they eat is impure.

ਰਾਜਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਲਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥

Raaj rang maal rang.

Intoxicated with power and thrilled with wealth,

ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਨਚੈ ਨੰਗੁ ॥

Rang raṫaa nachæ nang.

they delight in their pleasures, and dance shamelessly.

ਨਾਨਕ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

Naanak tʰagi▫aa mutʰaa jaa▫é.

O Nanak! They are deluded and defrauded.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥

viṇ naavæ paṫ ga▫i▫aa gavaa▫é. ||1||

Without the Lord’s Name, they lose their honor and depart. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਖਾਧੈ ਕਿਆ ਪੈਧੈ ਹੋਇ ॥

Ki▫aa kʰaaḋʰæ ki▫aa pæḋʰæ ho▫é.

What good is food, and what good are clothes,

ਜਾ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

Jaa man naahee sachaa so▫é.

if the True Lord does not abide within the mind?

ਕਿਆ ਮੇਵਾ ਕਿਆ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੈਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

Ki▫aa mévaa ki▫aa gʰi▫o guṛ mitʰaa ki▫aa mæḋaa ki▫aa maas.

What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?

ਕਿਆ ਕਪੜੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ॥

Ki▫aa kapaṛ ki▫aa séj sukʰaalee keejėh bʰog bilaas.

What good are clothes, and what good is a soft bed, to enjoy pleasures and sensual delights?

ਕਿਆ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਿਆ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਆਵੈ ਮਹਲੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

Ki▫aa laskar ki▫aa néb kʰavaasee aavæ mahlee vaas.

What good is an army, and what good are soldiers, servants and mansions to live in?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੇ ਟੋਲ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੨॥

Naanak saché naam viṇ sabʰé tol viṇaas. ||2||

O Nanak! Without the True Name, all this paraphernalia shall disappear. ||2||

ਪਵੜੀ ॥

Pavṛee.

Pauree:

ਜਾਤੀ ਦੈ ਕਿਆ ਹਥਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਖੀਐ ॥

Jaaṫee ḋæ ki▫aa haṫʰ sach parkʰee▫æ.

What good is social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within.

ਮਹੁਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਚਖੀਐ ॥

Mahuraa hovæ haṫʰ maree▫æ chakʰee▫æ.

Pride in one’s status is like poison-holding it in your hand and eating it, you shall die.

ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

Saché kee sirkaar jug jug jaaṇee▫æ.

The True Lord’s Sovereign Rule is known throughout the ages.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣੀਐ ॥

Hukam manné sirḋaar ḋar ḋeebaaṇee▫æ.

One who respects the Hukam of the Lord’s Command is honored and respected in the Court of the Lord.

ਫੁਰਮਾਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਾਰ ਖਸਮਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ॥

Furmaanee hæ kaar kʰasam patʰaa▫i▫aa.

By the Order of our Lord and Master, we have been brought into this world.

ਤਬਲਬਾਜ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

Ṫabalbaaj beechaar sabaḋ suṇaa▫i▫aa.

The Drummer, the Guru, has announced the Lord’s meditation, through the Word of the Shabad.

ਇਕਿ ਹੋਏ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਇਕਨਾ ਸਾਖਤੀ ॥

Ik ho▫é asvaar iknaa saakʰ▫ṫee.

Some have mounted their horses in response, and others are saddling up.

ਇਕਨੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ਇਕਨਾ ਤਾਖਤੀ ॥੧੦॥

Iknee baḋʰé bʰaar iknaa ṫaakʰ▫ṫee. ||10||

Some have tied up their bridles, and others have already ridden off. ||10||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok mėhlaa 1.

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਜਾ ਪਕਾ ਤਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਰਹੀ ਸੁ ਪਲਰਿ ਵਾੜਿ ॥

Jaa pakaa ṫaa kati▫aa rahee so palar vaaṛ.

When the crop is ripe, then it is cut down; only the stalks are left standing.

ਸਣੁ ਕੀਸਾਰਾ ਚਿਥਿਆ ਕਣੁ ਲਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਝਾੜਿ ॥

Saṇ keesaaraa chiṫʰi▫aa kaṇ la▫i▫aa ṫan jʰaaṛ.

The corn on the cob is put into the thresher, and the kernels are separated from the cobs.

ਦੁਇ ਪੁੜ ਚਕੀ ਜੋੜਿ ਕੈ ਪੀਸਣ ਆਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥

Ḋu▫é puṛ chakee joṛ kæ peesaṇ aa▫é bahitʰ.

Placing the kernels between the two mill-stones, people sit and grind the corn.

ਜੋ ਦਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਜਬੁ ਡਿਠੁ ॥੧॥

Jo ḋar rahé so ubré Naanak ajab ditʰ. ||1||

Those kernels which stick to the central axle are spared-Nanak has seen this wonderful vision! ||1||

ਵੇਖੁ ਜਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਬਧਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

vékʰ jė mitʰaa kati▫aa kat kut baḋʰaa paa▫é.

Look, and see how the sugar-cane is cut down. After cutting away its branches, its feet are bound together into bundles,
