ਖੁੰਢਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਲ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

Kʰundʰaa anḋar rakʰ kæ ḋén so mal sajaa▫é.

and then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed.

ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਟਟਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਪੈ ਤੈ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥

Ras kas tatar paa▫ee▫æ ṫapæ ṫæ villaa▫é.

What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out.

ਭੀ ਸੋ ਫੋਗੁ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ਦਿਚੈ ਅਗਿ ਜਾਲਾਇ ॥

Bʰee so fog samaalee▫æ ḋichæ ag jaalaa▫é.

And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਠੈ ਪਤਰੀਐ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਆਇ ॥੨॥

Naanak mitʰæ paṫree▫æ vékʰhu lokaa aa▫é. ||2||

Nanak: O people! Come and see how the sweet sugarcane is treated. ||2||

ਪਵੜੀ ॥

Pavṛee.

Pauree:

ਇਕਨਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਸ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ ॥

Iknaa maraṇ na chiṫ aas gʰaṇéri▫aa.

Some do not think of death; they entertain great hopes.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰਿਆ ॥

Mar mar jamėh niṫ kisæ na kéri▫aa.

They die, and are re-born, and die, over and over again. They are of no use at all!

ਆਪਨੜੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਹਨਿ ਚੰਗੇਰਿਆ ॥

Aapnaṛæ man chiṫ kahan changéri▫aa.

In their conscious minds, they call themselves good.

ਜਮਰਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੇਰਿਆ ॥

Jamraajæ niṫ niṫ manmukʰ héri▫aa.

The King of the Angels of Death hunts down those self-willed Manmukhs, over and over again.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੂਣ ਹਾਰਾਮ ਕਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

Manmukʰ looṇ haaraam ki▫aa na jaaṇi▫aa.

The Manmukhs are false to their own selves; they feel no gratitude for what they have been given.

ਬਧੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਲਾਮ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਭਾਣਿਆ ॥

Baḋʰé karan salaam kʰasam na bʰaaṇi▫aa.

Those who merely perform rituals of worship are not pleasing to their Lord and Master.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥

Sach milæ mukʰ naam saahib bʰaavsee.

Those who attain the True Lord and chant His Name are pleasing to the Lord.

ਕਰਸਨਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੧॥

Karsan ṫakʰaṫ salaam likʰi▫aa paavsee. ||11||

They worship the Lord and bow at His Throne. They fulfill their preordained destiny. ||11||

First Mehl, Shalok:

ਮਛੀ ਤਾਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਕਿਆ ਆਕਾਸੁ ॥

Machʰee ṫaaroo ki▫aa karé pankʰee ki▫aa aakaas.

What can deep water do to a fish? What can the vast sky do to a bird?

ਪਥਰ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

Paṫʰar paalaa ki▫aa karé kʰusré ki▫aa gʰar vaas.

What can cold do to a stone? What is married life to a eunuch?

ਕੁਤੇ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਕੁਤੀ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

Kuṫé chanḋan laa▫ee▫æ bʰee so kuṫee ḋʰaaṫ.

You may apply sandalwood oil to a dog, but he will still be a dog.

ਬੋਲਾ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠ ॥

Bolaa jé samjaa▫ee▫æ paṛee▫ah simriṫ paatʰ.

You may try to teach a deaf person by reading the Smritis to him, but how will he learn?

ਅੰਧਾ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਲਹਿ ਪਚਾਸ ॥

Anḋʰaa chaanaṇ rakʰee▫æ ḋeevé balėh pachaas.

You may place a light before a blind man and burn fifty lamps, but how will he see?

ਚਉਣੇ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਵੈ ਘਾਸੁ ॥

Cha▫uṇé su▫inaa paa▫ee▫æ chuṇ chuṇ kʰaavæ gʰaas.

You may place gold before a herd of cattle, but they will pick out the grass to eat.

ਲੋਹਾ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਢਹੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਪਾਸ ॥

Lohaa maaraṇ paa▫ee▫æ dʰahæ na ho▫é kapaas.

You may add flux to iron and melt it, but it will not become soft like cotton.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਏਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

Naanak moorakʰ éhi guṇ bolé saḋaa viṇaas. ||1||

O Nanak! This is the nature of a fool-everything he speaks is useless and wasted. ||1||

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਕੈਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

Kæhaa kanchan ṫutæ saar.

When pieces of bronze or gold or iron break,

ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥

Agnee gandʰ paa▫é lohaar.

the metal-smith welds them together again in the fire, and the bond is established.

ਗੋਰੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਤੁਟੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥

Goree séṫee ṫutæ bʰaṫaar.

If a husband leaves his wife,

ਪੁਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

Puṫeeⁿ gandʰ pavæ sansaar.

their children may bring them back together in the world, and the bond is established.

ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

Raajaa mangæ ḋiṫæ gandʰ paa▫é.

When the king makes a demand, and it is met, the bond is established.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

Bʰukʰi▫aa gandʰ pavæ jaa kʰaa▫é.

When the hungry man eats, he is satisfied, and the bond is established.

ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ ॥

Kaalaa gandʰ naḋee▫aa meeh jʰol.

In the famine, the rain fills the streams to overflowing, and the bond is established.

ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ॥

Gandʰ pareeṫee mitʰé bol.

There is a bond between love and words of sweetness.

ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

Béḋaa gandʰ bolé sach ko▫é.

When one speaks the Truth, a bond is established with the Holy Scriptures.

ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਨੇਕੀ ਸਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

Mu▫i▫aa gandʰ nékee saṫ ho▫é.

Through goodness and truth, the dead establish a bond with the living.

ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

Éṫ gandʰ varṫæ sansaar.

Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.

ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਾਰ ॥

Moorakʰ gandʰ pavæ muhi maar.

The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Naanak aakʰæ éhu beechaar.

Nanak says this after deep reflection:

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

Sifṫee gandʰ pavæ ḋarbaar. ||2||

through the Lord’s Praise, we establish a bond with His Court. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Aapé kuḋraṫ saaj kæ aapé karé beechaar.

He Himself created and adorned the Universe, and He Himself contemplates it.

ਇਕਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

Ik kʰoté ik kʰaré aapé parkʰaṇhaar.

Some are counterfeit, and some are genuine. He Himself is the Appraiser.

ਖਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਾਰਿ ॥

Kʰaré kʰajaanæ paa▫ee▫ah kʰoté satee▫ah baahar vaar.

The genuine are placed in His Treasury, while the counterfeit are thrown away.

ਖੋਟੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

Kʰoté sachee ḋargėh sutee▫ah kis aagæ karahi pukaar.

The counterfeit are thrown out of the True Court-unto whom should they complain?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਛੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

Saṫgur pichʰæ bʰaj pavėh éhaa karṇee saar.

They should worship and follow the True Guru-this is the lifestyle of excellence.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਖੋਟਿਅਹੁ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

Saṫgur kʰoti▫ahu kʰaré karé sabaḋ savaaraṇhaar.

The True Guru converts the counterfeit into genuine; through the Word of the Shabad, He embellishes and exalts us.

ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

Sachee ḋargėh mannee▫an gur kæ parém pi▫aar.

Those who have enshrined love and affection for the Guru, are honored in the True Court.

ਗਣਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥

Gaṇaṫ ṫinaa ḋee ko ki▫aa karé jo aap bakʰsé karṫaar. ||12||

Who can estimate the value of those who have been forgiven by the Creator Lord Himself? ||12||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok mėhlaa 1.

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਹਮ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪੀਰਾ ਮਸਾਇਕਾ ਰਾਇਆ ॥

Ham jér jimee ḋunee▫aa peeraa masaa▫ikaa raa▫i▫aa.

All the spiritual teachers, their disciples and the rulers of the world shall be buried under the ground.

ਮੇ ਰਵਦਿ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹਾ ਅਫਜੂ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

Mé ravaḋ baaḋisaahaa afjoo kʰuḋaa▫é.

The emperors shall also pass away; God alone is Eternal.

ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਏਕ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੧॥

Ék ṫoohee ék ṫuhee. ||1||

You alone, Lord, You alone. ||1||

ਨ ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵਾ ਨਰਾ ॥

Na ḋév ḋaanvaa naraa.

Neither the angels, nor the demons, nor human beings,

ਨ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਧਰਾ ॥

Na siḋʰ saaḋʰikaa ḋʰaraa.

nor the Siddhas, nor the seekers shall remain on the earth.

ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ ॥

Asaṫ ék ḋigar ku▫ee.
