148 ਕਬ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਕਬ ਅਕਿ ਡਾਲਿ ਕਬ ਉਚੀ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥ Kab chanḋan kab ak daal kab uchee pareeṫ. Sometimes it is perched on the sandalwood tree, and sometimes it is on the branch of the poisonous swallow-wort. Sometimes, it soars through the heavens. ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲਗੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥ Naanak hukam chalaa▫ee▫æ saahib lagee reeṫ. ||2|| O Nanak! Our Lord and Master leads us on, according to the Hukam of His Command; such is His Way. ||2|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਕੇਤੇ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਾਣ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥ Kéṫé kahėh vakʰaaṇ kahi kahi jaavṇaa. Some speak and expound, and while speaking and lecturing, they pass away. ਵੇਦ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥ véḋ kahėh vakʰi▫aaṇ anṫ na paavṇaa. The Vedas speak and expound on the Lord, but they do not know His limits. ਪੜਿਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਬੁਝਿਐ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥ Paṛi▫æ naahee bʰéḋ bujʰi▫æ paavṇaa. Not by studying, but through understanding, is the Lord’s Mystery revealed. ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਭੇਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਾ ॥ Kʰat ḋarsan kæ bʰékʰ kisæ sach samaavṇaa. There are six pathways in the Shastras, but how rare are those who merge in the True Lord through them. ਸਚਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥ Sachaa purakʰ alakʰ sabaḋ suhaavaṇaa. The True Lord is Unknowable; through the Word of His Shabad, we are embellished. ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਸੰਖ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥ Manné naa▫o bisankʰ ḋargėh paavṇaa. One who believes in the Name of the Infinite Lord, attains the Court of the Lord. ਖਾਲਕ ਕਉ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਢਾਢੀ ਗਾਵਣਾ ॥ Kʰaalak ka▫o aaḋés dʰaadʰee gaavṇaa. I humbly bow to the Creator Lord; I am a minstrel singing His Praises. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਾ ॥੨੧॥ Naanak jug jug ék man vasaavṇaa. ||21|| Nanak enshrines the Lord within his mind. He is the One, throughout the ages. ||21|| ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥ Salok mėhlaa 2. Shalok, Second Mehl: ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਠੂਹਿਆ ਨਾਗੀ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ Manṫree ho▫é atʰoohi▫aa naagee lagæ jaa▫é. Those who charm scorpions and handle snakes, ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣੈ ਦੇ ਕੂਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ॥ Aapaṇ haṫʰee aapṇæ ḋé koochaa aapé laa▫é. only brand themselves with their own hands. ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਅਤੀ ਹੂ ਧਕਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ Hukam pa▫i▫aa ḋʰur kʰasam kaa aṫee hoo ḋʰakaa kʰaa▫é. By the preordained Order of our Lord and Master, they are beaten badly, and struck down. ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੜੈ ਡੁਬੈ ਹਕਿ ਨਿਆਇ ॥ Gurmukʰ si▫o manmukʰ aṛæ dubæ hak ni▫aa▫é. If the self-willed Manmukhs fight with the Gurmukh, they are condemned by the Lord, the True Judge. ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥ Ḋuhaa siri▫aa aapé kʰasam vékʰæ kar vi▫upaa▫é. He Himself is the Lord and Master of both worlds. He beholds all and makes the exact determination. ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ Naanak évæ jaaṇee▫æ sabʰ kichʰ ṫisėh rajaa▫é. ||1|| O Nanak! Know this well: everything is in accordance with His Will. ||1|| ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥ Mėhlaa 2. Second Mehl: ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੇ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ Naanak parkʰé aap ka▫o ṫaa paarakʰ jaaṇ. O Nanak! If someone judges himself, only then is he known as a real judge. ਰੋਗੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਦੋਵੈ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਵੈਦੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ Rog ḋaaroo ḋovæ bujʰæ ṫaa væḋ sujaaṇ. If someone understands both the disease and the medicine, only then is he a wise physician. ਵਾਟ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥ vaat na kar▫ee maamlaa jaaṇæ mihmaaṇ. Do not involve yourself in idle business on the way; remember that you are only a guest here. ਮੂਲੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਾਣਿ ਲਾਏ ਹਾਣੁ ॥ Mool jaaṇ galaa karé haaṇ laa▫é haaṇ. Speak with those who know the Primal Lord, and renounce your evil ways. ਲਬਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਟੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ Lab na chal▫ee sach rahæ so visat parvaaṇ. That virtuous person who does not walk in the way of greed, and who abides in Truth, is accepted and famous. ਸਰੁ ਸੰਧੇ ਆਗਾਸ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਬਾਣੁ ॥ Sar sanḋʰé aagaas ka▫o ki▫o pahuchæ baaṇ. If an arrow is shot at the sky, how can it reach there? ਅਗੈ ਓਹੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਾਹੇਦੜੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥ Agæ oh agamm hæ vaahéḋaṛ jaaṇ. ||2|| The sky above is unreachable-know this well, O archer! ||2|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀਆ ॥ Naaree purakʰ pi▫aar parém seegaaree▫aa. The soul-bride loves her Husband Lord; she is embellished with His Love. ਕਰਨਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਰਹਨੀ ਵਾਰੀਆ ॥ Karan bʰagaṫ ḋin raaṫ na rahnee vaaree▫aa. She worships Him day and night; she cannot be restrained from doing so. ਮਹਲਾ ਮੰਝਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆ ॥ Mėhlaa manjʰ nivaas sabaḋ savaaree▫aa. In the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence, she has made her home; she is adorned with the Word of His Shabad. ਸਚੁ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੇ ਵੇਚਾਰੀਆ ॥ Sach kahan arḋaas sé véchaaree▫aa. She is humble, and she offers her true and sincere prayer. ਸੋਹਨਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਆ ॥ Sohan kʰasmæ paas hukam siḋʰaaree▫aa. She is beautiful in the Company of her Lord and Master; she walks in the Way of His Will. ਸਖੀ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਮਨਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੀਆ ॥ Sakʰee kahan arḋaas manhu pi▫aaree▫aa. With her dear friends, she offers her heart-felt prayers to her Beloved. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ਫਿਟੁ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥ Bin naavæ ḋʰarig vaas fit so jeevi▫aa. Cursed is that home, and shameful is that life, which is without the Name of the Lord. ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਿਆ ॥੨੨॥ Sabaḋ savaaree▫aas amriṫ peevi▫aa. ||22|| But she who is adorned with the Word of His Shabad, drinks in the Amrit of His Nectar. ||22|| ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ Salok mėhlaa 1. Shalok, First Mehl: ਮਾਰੂ ਮੀਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਅਗੀ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਖ ॥ Maaroo meehi na ṫaripṫi▫aa agee lahæ na bʰukʰ. The desert is not satisfied by rain, and the fire is not quenched by desire. ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਜਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਸਾਇਰ ਭਰੇ ਕਿਸੁਕ ॥ Raajaa raaj na ṫaripṫi▫aa saa▫ir bʰaré kisuk. The king is not satisfied with his kingdom, and the oceans are full, but still they thirst for more. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕੇਤੀ ਪੁਛਾ ਪੁਛ ॥੧॥ Naanak saché naam kee kéṫee puchʰaa puchʰ. ||1|| O Nanak! How many times must I seek and ask for the True Name? ||1|| ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥ Mėhlaa 2. Second Mehl: ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸਿ ਜਨਮਸਿ ਜਾਵਤੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥ Nihfalaⁿ ṫas janmas jaavaṫ barahm na binḋṫé. Life is useless, as long as one does not know the Lord God. ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥ Saagraⁿ sansaaras gur parsaadee ṫarėh ké. Only a few cross over the world-ocean, by Guru’s Grace. ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ Karaṇ kaaraṇ samraṫʰ hæ kaho Naanak beechaar. The Lord is the All-powerful Cause of all causes, says Nanak after deep deliberation. ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ Kaaraṇ karṫé vas hæ jin kal rakʰee ḋʰaar. ||2|| The creation is subject to the Creator, who sustains it by His Almighty Power. ||2|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ਢਾਢੀ ਵਸਿਆ ॥ Kʰasmæ kæ ḋarbaar dʰaadʰee vasi▫aa. In the Court of the Lord and Master, His minstrels dwell. ਸਚਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਲਾਣਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ॥ Sachaa kʰasam kalaaṇ kamal vigsi▫aa. Singing the Praises of their True Lord and Master, the lotuses of their hearts have blossomed forth. ਖਸਮਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਮਨਹੁ ਰਹਸਿਆ ॥ Kʰasmahu pooraa paa▫é manhu rėhsi▫aa. Obtaining their Perfect Lord and Master, their minds are transfixed with ecstasy. ਦੁਸਮਨ ਕਢੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਸਰਸਿਆ ॥ Ḋusman kadʰé maar sajaṇ sarsi▫aa. Their enemies have been driven out and subdued, and their friends are very pleased. ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਸਿਆ ॥ Sachaa saṫgur sévan sachaa maarag ḋasi▫aa. Those who serve the Truthful True Guru are shown the True Path. |
